You say your gold is worth $40,000 but you don't say what gold price that is based on. Don't go to a pawnshop They will only buy small quantities at much less than market value I saw one such place today offering around $7 (!!) per ounce

Go to Yellow Pages and find a bullion dealer or wholesale jeweller and compare their price per oz. with what you can check on the web.

You know your going to get gypped anywhere you go so if your willing to take a loss go to a pawn shop.

I wish I could be of more help but under no circumstances go into some pawn shop or jewelry establishment without checking their criminal background. In my town one of the bigger buyers of gold will send burglars to your home to take over where he left off after first getting all the identification needed to buy that much gold. You can run a cheap ad in the paper (if you like the idea of sleeping with a loaded gun near your bed) and sell small amounts at a time to a ton of different people. You'll net more that way becasue you can split the difference in the premiums that gold dealers charge to make a transaction but it is kind of a headache. Or, deal with one of the national brokerages, ship insured and await their cashiers check. You won't get the shaft. You can also deive to a large city where there is a reputable dealer (not a pawn broker), take plenty of identification to prove that you're legit and make the transaction. They will pay you with a certified check drawn on their bank, not cash. If someone offers to pay with cash, have a bodyguard accompany you to your bank because you might get robbed on the way otherwise.
