Crude Oil 57%
Taxes 14%
Refining 18%
Distribution and Marketing 11%
Other factors can effect these percentages (ie seasonal demand, distance from refinery, political/economic climate etc) |

The money goes up in smoke
The station franchisee makes very little off of you close to $0.02 per litre or $0.08 per gallon
A lot of the money sticks in the company. They do a good job in the price stickers trying to tell you its only 2-3% profit but what they're not telling you is they've also buried profits in the refining, and distribution components of the sticker. |

Well a good chunk goes to the State for taxes at least in Wisconsin anyway. Another chunk goes to the Federal government. The gas station gets a chunk, In Wisconsin I believe they have to charge at least 6% above cost so at $3 a gallon they are getting a minimum of .18 cents a gallon. The distribution company gets a chunk (they guys that deliver the gas to the gas station.). The refinery gets a chunk. The oil company gets a chunk. |

It really makes you wonder dosent it.. Well i know the oil companies are getting rich but im sure the gas stations are getting their share also.. the reason i say this is because i live in a small town and last year when the prices skyrocketed we all as a community got together and did a little test..
we have 5 different gas stations out here and one of them is locally owned.. so we all decided that we would buy from the lowest priced one for a whole week even if it was out of our way.. well of course the locally owned one was lowest and wow he must have made alot of money in that week but.. my point is coming..
The other four businesses were getting no business, with gas or anything else for that.. as the week progressed we watched and by the weeks end they had lowered their prices by 55 cents.. Now i know thats not a huge deal and all but its just proving that they can lower the prices and they are making a profit on it.. To us here it was a huge deal..
We proved our point and i believe that gas stations are making their good share on gas.. but the oil companys are too..
Hope ya enjoyed this.. It was fun when we did it and maybe we will do it again.. lol..

I have to say that it goes on oil company's. I read an article last year and the CEO and the vp's made about 1 to 3 million in profit and bonuses last year... we need to go on strike... at least for one day.... they weill loose money really fast. |
