I WAS IN THE 8TH GRADE. SCHOOL WAS CLOSED BECAUSE IT WAS TOO COLD AND SNOWY. I REMEMBER TURNING ON TV SHORTLY AFTER IT HAPPENED AND THE NATIONAL NEWS WAS ON SHOWING RERUN AFTER RERUN ALL DAY OF IT. THEY ZOOMED IN ON CHRISTA MCCAULIFFS PARENTS AS THEY WATCHED THE SHUTTLE BLOW UP TO SHOW WHAT THEIR REACTION WAS. I THOUGHT THAT WAS TERRIBLE. |

At work for the CA Department of Education. Glued to the TV in the print shop where the video was replayed over and over.
I have since visted the memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. |

I was 7 years old and in Grade 2 at school but I don't remember where I was at the precise moment it happened. Considering I'm on the other side of the world I was probably asleep in bed. |

Sitting in the dentist's office with my mother--I was seven and she had gotten me out of school for an appointment. I remember it being on the tv in the waiting room and at first not understanding what was going on or why people were upset. |

I was working as a vending company driver. The radio in the truck was broken, so I didn't hear about it until I got back to the shop. A co-worker asked if I had heard about the space shuttle blowing up. I thought it was a joke. I said, "no", and was waiting for the punchline. That's when she got real somber and said that it wasn't a joke. |

I was in Chatham, a small town outside of Springfield, IL. I was online (yes, it WAS possible to be online in 1986 if you were a super geek...CompuServe rocked back then!)
Someone came online and said, "The Space Shuttle exploded" and I completely didn't believe them. Then someone else came on and said the same thing. I turned on the TV and saw that it actually had happened. I forgot to go log out of the computer, and so in those days the modem tied up the phone line all afternoon and I racked up connect time charges with CompuServe. I was numb for the rest of the day, thinking, "How could this have happened?"
Little did I know that we'd all be asking that again years later as Columbia made its final descent over the southern US. |

I was in 4th grade, and my science teacher had actually been one of the potential candidates for that trip. I remember thinking I was so glad he wasn't the one chosen. It was probably the first really big, really bad thing I ever saw happen and I think it was the first time I ever cried for strangers. |
