jckstar | Which is a better way to not waste electricity? |
Turn on and off as you come in and go out of the room or just leave the lights on? Additional Details ok sorry I forgot to say that it's only for a short time period. Say, in 3 minutes. It is somewhat troublesome to turn it on and off if you go in and out from the room... |

Turn off and on is the best way, change your bulbs to ones rated for Energysaving, change your appliances to Energuide branded.
Make sure all your windows and doorways are sealed (helps with fires too!), adjust your heating and cooling for a moderate temperature |

Turn it off. The turning the lights on using a bunch of energy story is a myth that began with flourescent lights. A good explanation of it is here:
http://facilities.uoregon.edu/cps/energy/myths.html
(If you click on additional information there are even more details)
If I remember right, if you are going to be gone for over a minute, then it makes sense to turn off a flourescent light. A typical lightbulb doesn't have that same process of using more energy to start, however, so you don't need to worry about wasting electricity turning them on and off- even if it is 3 minutes. |

Turn off the light every time you leave the room.
If you want to save more electricity, replace your bulbs with compact fluorescents. They save electricity and money. The money you save from the reduced electricity consumption is way more than the cost of the bulbs. They last longer too! |

Actually, the amount of electricity you use turning the light on is quite a lot... don't turn the light off if you're going to switch it back on again in less than five minutes. If you walk in and out of a room several times in say, half an hour, you often use more power than just leaving it on. Obviously, if you're going to be out of the room for more than fifteen minute stretches, turning it off is best. |

It depends on what type of lights and how long you intend to be out of the room. If it's an incandescent light, turn it off when you leave the room. If it's fluorescent, turn it off if you're going to be out of the room for an extended period of time. |

switch-off all electrical/electronic equipment/devices :)
These days, power saver lights are available to save electricity. Switch off unnecessary lights and electronic devices. |

turning down your water heaters set temp just a few points will save you a lot of energy and so does keeping your home just 2 degrees cooler. turning it down 5-10 at night save a lot more but you will need an extra blanket or two. you can put clear plastic films on all windows and curtains help. replace standard bulbs with compact fluorescent which use about 1/3 the juice. seal all gaps around doors. a lighter around the seam will show you were they are. of course turning off lights when they aren't needed but letting in sun light during the day use no electricity.
keeping you freezers full, even if it is just bags of ice make them work less to stay cool. letting hot food cool before putting it in the frig save it from cooling it down and putting hot food in the fridge can also make foods spoil faster (meats, cheese and other milk products) |
