I've been in web design/development for about 8 years now. I've always used Omnis ( http://www.omnis.com ) for hosting and never had a problem.
They use Unix-based servers which are more secure (due to most viruses created are for Windows-based servers). Also, they have many useful tools in the control panel that you should check out. If you are taking donations, I suggest looking into PayPal ( http://www.paypal.com ) which would probably be the quickest (and most secure) route.

I would recommend that if you are starting out you start off with a FREE website so you can get your feet wet and see what you really need before you fork out the cash. Remember, there are no money back guarantees with most web hosts, so if you pick the wrong one, you threw away that money. Try http://www.myownfreeweb.com/ where you can get 250MB disk space, 6GB bandwidth, and Webmail, POP, email, 29 preinstalled scripts, and more all for FREE. If you out grow the free level you can always pay a few dollars more ($2.99) to get a lot more space and bandwidth. |

I was in the same boat as you a little while ago. Every company I checked seemed to have a lot of bad reviews, and a lot of good reviews.
I finally settled on Hostmonster. Literally like 95% of the reviews I read said they are really good. And no kidding, they were right. The price is a little more than some of the cheaper ones, but they are very reliable. The customer service is great too. You get a free domain name and a ton of great features (unlimited storage and monthly transfer, for example).

Big web hosting companies have hundreds of thousands of users so of course there will be at least hundreds of negative reviews for each of them.
Well, it depends on how much you want to spend.
1. For up to $5 I recommend:

If you are serious about websites either for personal or your business, don't go to free web hosting as they are usually not reliable and you may end up losing all your hard work. Free web hosts usually put advertisements on your websites and it could be annoying.
If you like to create websites (usually you will end up more than 1 website, I got more than 100 websites in about 6 months' time), go for multiple web hosting services where you could host all your websites in one account.
I would like to suggest following webhosting which I use, they are excellent.
