I have to go with Batman. You know, I think that mystery and suspense have always been the topmost preference of an average comic book reader. These two factors are found in abundance in Batman comics.
He is a dark, mysterious and exceptionally intelligent knight who battles some of the most enigmatic villains.
In the success of a hero, there is always a huge contribution from the side of its villains. I think Batman has got the most competent villains in Penguin, Joker & Riddler et al. They always keep Batman at the top of his game. In all, wonderful storylines, exotic background & witty villains make a good superhero.

There was more about him for humans to identify with (nothing "batty" about him...except maybe when he was disguised as Clark Kent).
He didn't need a sidekick, like Robin, to get the job done; just the love of the people ("Look, a bird! A plane! No, it's Superman!).
Plus, Christopher Reeves (may he rest in peace) made the best Superman ever.
