Why are penguins black and white?

All penguins have a white underside and a dark (mostly black) upperside. This is for camouflage. A predator looking up from below (such as an orca or a leopard seal) has difficulty distinguishing between a white penguin belly and the reflective water surface. The dark plummage on their backs camouflages them from above.

It's for camouflage purposes. All adult penguins are countershaded; that is they are dark on their dorsal (back) surfaces and white on their ventral (underside) surfaces. The dark dorsal side blends in with the dark ocean depths when viewed from above. The light ventral side blends in with the lighter surface of the sea when viewed from below.

The result is that predators or prey do not see a contrast between the countershaded animal and the environment.

Simple - camoflage. The only area that a penguin is threatened is in the water. When the penguin is in the water, any predator above the penguin will see the black side (tough to spot) and any predator below will see the white side (also tough to spot against the sky and ice)

believe it or not its to keep warm. the black on the back soaks up the heat from the sun. and the white under belly keeps them from transferring the heat as they swim or slide and to protect from preditors

that's an easy one. the first male penguin was black and the first female penguin was white. they has some "jungle fever" and to our amazement, their offspring didn't come out gray.

Penguins are not black and white ... they are white and black. They are white on their bellies to blend in under the ice when killer whales are looking up from the depths of the ocean. Their black backs help to attract heat fron the sun.
