Being overweight comes from food, lack of exercise and other indicators.
Why single out America?
South America-as Latin America becomes more developed, supermarkets stocked with processed foods have become the norm, rising from 20 percent to 60 percent.
Europe? In the UK snack food consumption rose nearly 25 percent in five years.
Africa? In some parts obesity affects more children than malnutrition.
Asia? Roads in Shanghai that were once filled with pedestrians and cyclists are now congested with cars.
Oceania? Pacific islanders have always valued hefty physiques. Now their shift away rom local foods to a high-fat, Western diet has made them among the world's fattest people. |

Obsesity is rampant in the states not because people can't control their eating and they all go out to mcDonalds - that would be a little prejudicial.
You need to look more at the culture, and choices they are presented with.
Portions at restaurants just keep trying to outdo themselves.... they get bigger and biggger and bigger. Lots of entries have cream and god knows what else to make them taste good. Not just mcdonalds, any kind of store...
You buy a plastic cup of soda, you're presented with cups that range from normal, to super sized, which is 2L !! That's a full bottle of coke!
Other areas of the world do not present such a vast mind boggling array of fatty foods.
So yes, lots of people go out to eat instead of cooking for foods. People don't exercise enough and spend too much time glued to TV. But add poor eating choices to the mix and the urge to always outdo the other - "bigger & better" - and you have a lethal combination. |

Lifestyle - The fattest Americans live in suburbs and drive or use public transportation to get around. It's much more different than living in, say, London or NYC where walking is much easier and convenient. We don't get enough excercise as a result.
In addition, we are so busy that we don't find the time to cook for ourselves a lot. It's much easier to grab fast food or go out to eat than to prepare you own meal. For the most part, these places are overly abundant and more unhealthy....and they serve huge portions. |

The accessibility of inexpensive, high-fat food is everywhere. Even though to some, America seems like the land of the wealthy, most of them are fairly poor. I say, "poor" based on American standards. Plus, the education is horrid. They really aren't to blame, they aren't taught well. They have so many problems, they seek comfort in salty or sweet food (or both) and alcohol.
In addition, many do NOT get the level of activity necessary to maintain a decent weight. The fat, lazy American is a sad truth.
But, they all aren't that way - just many of them. There are so many that are very healthy, fit and loving the active lifestyle.
Wherever there is freedom, there is atrocity. |
