Because of the way society is teaching kids how to spell. Look at commercials - Great is spelled GR-8 and light is spelled LITE not to mention they think that how you write in a chat room is acceptable writing everywhere. One of my bosses did that and we all pointed out how stupid it looked in correspondence not to mention we couldn't understand half of what he was writing to us in emails because we don't do chat rooms. (The guy is in his 40's)
Frankly, I have never abbreviated when chatting. I believe in spelling out my words, properly. I was brought up that you always spell correctly, but kids aren't being taught that now, so what do they care about spell check? Half their words aren't going to be able to be found anyway since their spelling is so horrible spell check can't figure out what they are trying to say. |

I know sometimes I use spell check and it does not catch some of my words... also I kinda type fast and it is incorrect. But I think it would help if we just proofread our answers or questions. Also , maybe the people that have a problem with the spelling thing would just get over it. yahoo answers is not an English class nor is anything on here formally written.. who cares?? |

One reason is the 'whole language' approach to reading and writing that was used in the early nineties. I am not saying whether or not I agree with this approach, but part of the theory behind it is that it is more important to get the thoughts on paper then it is to get the words spelled correctly; not waiting until spelling is mastered before writing.
It is effective in encouraging children to express their creativity at a younger age, but has also resulted in a generation of not only misspellers, but people who don't necessarily respect the value of properly written language. |

One of my biggest pet peeves and one which I consistently am reminded of and preach about. It's absolutely ridiculous that there are so many people out there that don't know how to spell, even if his/her life depended on it. |

we have a large pool of ignorant people. if you know how to spell you dont use spell check. you typed wrong. if you cant spell, you dont know how to do spell check. |

English is the hardest language to learn in the world. Spelling is hard for lots of people who were taught phonetics versus sight memorization. Even harder for those who are hard of hearing. You would have to believe that you spelled something wrong to use it. I am just as guilty as the next person. |
