gavinderbayne | Why do americans celebrate St Patricks day with such pride? |
I'm just curious, but why is it that every where I go right now, all I see is "Happy St Patricks Day" crap? I don't recall the entire population of USA being irish, and I find this to be insulting to the other Patron Saints that you completely igonre. For example what do you do to celebrate St Andrews day? (who is he I hear you cry!!??) The patron Saint of Scotland, whom have just a big an impact on american cutlure and heritage. Or St Davids day (Patron Saint of Wales) Another persecuted groupd of 'british' people that were thrown out of there own country by the feckin English.
So what reason is it that you all celebrate St Patricks day again? Additional Details If you read the question correctly (and I spelt the words better!!) You would see that I am not asking for the historical reason for this celebration, I am asking why the NON IRISH AMERICANS celebrate St Pats day, it has nothing really to do with you, we (meaning the rest of the real world!) do not celebrate the 4th of july, we dont have flag day, martin luther king day, thanksgiving, memorial day, etc etc etc. I just do not understand why it has such an impact on the american culture. |

Because most Americans have the cultural capacity of a boiled potato and so cling to any vague link to the culturally superior Irish rather than their own culture. They probably couldn't find Wales and Scotland on a map. |

I think its because they all get to drink GREEN beer...lol...
Sorry that you are offended. |

I think it's pretty interesting myself.
It probably started in the 19th century when America was growing its immigrant population. Many Irish arrived here and settled in major US cities like New York and Boston. Their impact on America's culture was pretty powerful.
I think one of the funniest parts of America's celebration of St. Patrick's Day is the vast consumption of corned beef. It is not a part of Ireland's diet and is a strictly American tradition. It became popular in the US when Irish immigrants in New York's Lower East Side couldn't afford their beloved bacon and found a less expensive alternative--thanks to their Jewish neighbors. |

they don't
i never thought they did at least all i thought it was is where you wear green all day and get **** faced all day |

Yeah, I know what you mean. I live in Athens (GREECE) & when the American base was here, they all wore green & tried to talk like Paddies. Quite pathetic really.
If you tried to start a fight with them, they'd back down. Not very Irish! |

Its a good excuse to take a day off of work and watch the NCAA with green beer. |

Probably just another excuse to get drunk and act stupid. I think it's silly but that is my opinion. |

Coned Beef, Cabbage & Green Beer. I love it!
I think it's widely celebrated because when the Irish immigrated to America, they were thought to be the lowest class of people. Whites would hire Black people to be servants, maid, caretakers before they would hire the Irish.
Now I think the Irish are celebrating the fact that they overcame the adversity they were met with when they came to America. Good Ole Irish Pride!
As for the other Saints that are not celebrated, I have no idea why. |

Most Americans can't even tell you who St. Patrick is or why he has a holiday or what the real Irish tradition is. To us it's just another excuse to party hard and get stupidly drunk, really has nothing to do with pride. It's just like Mardi Gras or New Years Eve, no one cares, they just want to party. |
|

powrmkrwd
|
i dont think pride has anything to do with it its just another reason to party and have a good time and we need more reasons to party |

because its a day to drink without guilt. Drink as much as you possibly can, everywhere, and enjoy every minute of it. The other saintly traditions probably don't bring in the fightin, drinkin', loons of traditional ireland. So, get your beer mug out tomorrow morning around 8:00 or so, and celebrate st patricks day like everyone else in the country.
by the way.. you forgot our old friend, st. valentine! We do alot to celebrate his honor! Spend your money! Buy chocolate and roses! Lingerie! In the true american spirit! Spend spend spend! |

Pride??? I think it's mostly just a drinking day for most americans... |

Er the Welsh weren't thrown out of their country, last time I looked they were still there, unfortunetly.
The Irish did get the rough end of the stick from us English though, sorry mate, won't happen again and all that.
Americans and the British in general, celebrate St. Patricks day for the same reasons none-christians celebrate christmas, its fun, and u can get drunk. |

What can you be more proud of than a day dedicated to getting sloshed? |

Other saints don't have the same kind of story that St. Patrick has. Does St. Andrew have such a story (He was an Apostle, but is rarely mentioned in the bible)? And very little is know about St. David as well. If their stories were as well known as St. Patrick's they would probably be celebrated in the same fashion. |

There are a lot of Irish imigrants in the US.
Besides it's a great excuse to get plastered, even if you aren't Irish. |

the real answer is this: most Irish Americans are Catholic and this is a Catholic Country whether you admit it or not and it is a chance for the church to be recognized on a holiday that most people celebrate but dont know why they celebrate. |
|

CureFreak

I am NOT Irish, nor would I ever wish to be! Therefore I do NOT celebrated that NASTY NASTY NASTY day. |
|

bfreemcd
 |
We celebrate because we can. What are you going to do about it -nothing.
If you don't get it stay home - unless your a hot young chick - then have a shot on me. Irish people love Americans and Irish Americans love Ireland. There is a a connection that is far deeper than St Patricks day for real Irish. |
