Whether or not an object will float does not depend on its weight, but rather its density. If an object is less dense (weighs less, per unit of volume) than the water it is placed on (fresh water has a density of about 1 gram per cubic centimeter. Salt water is denser.), it will float. So if, for example, an object were placed on a body of fresh water, and it weighed 10 kilograms, it would float as long as it had a volume of greater than 10,000 cubic centimeters.
This can be applied to air, as well. This is the same reason balloons filled with helium float up into the sky. Because helium is less dense than the surrounding air. |

blah,blah,blah..boyance, area, circumferance...whatever, the bottom line is that air is lighter than water. A boat is sorta like a ballon... it has air in the bottom of the it(from inside of course); which is below the water level, therefore the air wants to be above the water; hence making the boat 'float'. |

By Archimedes Principle, there is an upthrust known as the buoyancy equivalent in weight as the boat. The weight of the boat results in a force downwards, and the upthrust, which is the action-reaction pair with this weight, acts upwards resulting in a certain sort of negation that allows the resultant force to be zero, hence allowing the boat to float. |
