Why do cities build stadiums and arenas for professional sport teams with public money?

insuranceguytx
Because of the mistaken belief that the attraction of additional fans will create more jobs and increase the tax revenues to the city. In reality this RARELY happens. Studies of all the stadiums that cities have built in the past has show that only one stadium - Lambeau Field - has produced net benefits to the city. That one example is because the city of Green Bay owns the Packers. In every other case where a city has built a sports facility, the net result was a transfer of wealth from the city's taxpayers to the team owner. Keep that in mind the next time you vote.

Consider this, especially if you own a business. Would your business be more profitable if the city built your office, factory or place of work and you did not have to pay rent?

The status of being a city with a professional sports team. Professional leagues have gotten things to the point where it is a requirement to build a stadium to get a team.

There is an intangible benefit of having pride in a team, but the financial case is not a compelling reason.

Because hopefully, they can recollect what they spend in taxes etc....

Bread and circuses.

It's to keep the population distracted and sedated.

Because the public attends them.

The public votes for it?

Sports teams bring in revenue even win they lose. Since it benefits the public/city overall, they pay.

because i believe part of the income from that stadium goes toward the city , i could be wrong though

they say it brings more jobs and more money to the area and improves the tax base.is that true or bs I do not know.

Because the team brings outside revenue into the city, thus helping the city as a whole.

That is a way to generate tax revenue. A lot of people are sports nuts. If they think they are getting an awesome stadium, they would probably go for it. No one likes to go watch a game in a delapidated place.

If they don't spend their own money, that's just more money for them to use for future personal projects or to add to their own personal banks. Look at the politicians.
