Because the U.S. was founded by Christians and to Christians Sunday is the Sabbath and no work is to be done on that day. Therefore, no one worked or opened up their stores on Sundays. It is still like that in the good old parts of the country...aka the South and usually in small towns in the Midwest, too. |

Because Sunday is the day of rest. |

I think it may come from the old "Blue Laws", when NO business were open on Sundays......but due to supply-and-demand (mostly the demand to be able to shop on a Sunday), the laws were changed, and so stores can be open whenever they want. But most people want at least one day off in the week. |

Started years ago for people to honor their religion and a day of rest. |

THIS IS WHAT I FOUND ON GOOGLE
In Deuteronomy 5, the Sabbath is connected to God’s delivering his people from bondage in Egypt. Work is good. Bondage is bad. But work easily becomes a form of bondage. The Sabbath is a sign that our work is not coerced, and regular rest allows us to experience our work as free people rather than as bondslaves.
Christians today tend to connect the Sabbath with corporate worship, although the Hebrew Bible did not treat the Sabbath that way. In the Christian church, the history of Sabbath (and Sunday) is complex, but eventually the principal Christian day of worship and the principle of Sabbath rest coalesced in the church’s thinking. |

It started way back in the day and has to do with Religion. Sunday is the day to go to church...and for some reason (like a lot of religious things that have become common American traditions), it stuck. |

I hate that they do! There have been many occasions where I wanted to do some shopping on Sunday, but the store I wanted to go to was closed - or - it had just closed by the time I got there. |

Because it is religious. Most people who are Christians believe that Sunday is a holy day and they probably fought the goverment to not work on sundays |
