Why do people advertise things for ".99 cents"?
Are they really going to give me back 0.01 cents change? How would they do that? Take a piece of sandpaper to a penny, and give me a bit of penny dust?
Additional Details
I'm not asking why people advertise for, say "$19.99" as opposed to "$20". That's a completely different topic.

I'm asking about ".99 cents". Point nine nine cents. In other words, less than a penny.

Because the items would be sold in vast quantities so that when it is calculated out it makes a difference in TOTAL price.

For example, if you were buying 1,000,000 litres of oil etc.

Also, items they might be sold in packs of 100, a pack might be 99 cents, which would give a unit price of 0.99 cents each.

Why don't you give an example - that might help?

la buena bruja
They do it because they're stupid!

Unfortunately yes they will return a penny.

It is phsycological because something advertised as $7.99 seems much cheaper than something that is $8.00. Ultimately, if you are going to charge $8.00, you might as well charge $8.99.

Back when a penny had some value, it wasn't such a big joke, but now that the penny is worth less than the material that it is made of, it is a joke.
They need to get rid of the penny. Then companies will round prices such as $7.95 instead of $7.99

i have no idea good q

Because it sounds cheaper than $1.00 + tax... they always leave out the tax.

It's done to make the item appear much cheaper than before. It's just a psychological trick that stores use to make consumers buy more even though the "savings" are negligible.

For more information check out the Wikipedia link I included.

They do it because .99 sounds cheaper than $1.00. It's some psychological gimmick that was invented, and trust me, it works even though we may not believe it.

They still do make the penny in the USA.

Some products are worth 99 cents! Thank goodness for that because I can't seem to find that darn penny to pay for that dollar item.

Can someone lend me a penny!

joyceeleann
because its sounds better and less than a dollar...i you think that is bad...trying explaining why they charge 9/10ths of a gallon at the gas station....

$19.99 sounds better then $20.00

ano-ne
it's just a marketing tactic so that at first glance, you'll think it's cheap. plus they can save a lot if they won't give at least 300 people entering their store on a daily basis their .01 change.

DAVID
WAit what??? This is kinda confusing me, but won't they just give you a whole penny? I mean a whole dollar is 100 pennies?
