QUIZZLE!
Why do people say something costs 99 cents when it should really cost a dollar?
It's sort of getting annoying.

Leena
It's a selling technique. they think people will buy it cause 99 cents sounds less than $1. It's stupid I agree. Like a home for sale sounds better asking $599,000 rather than $600,000.

SuzyHomebaker
I was wondering the same thing. I should open a Dollar-and-Eight-Cent Store.

half baked
itas kindav like saying my freind has 7 veral kids when she only has two
or my freind will get braces 7verl times when it is only 3

those are a pain

Aliz
Because you can get a penny back, but it is really a marketing ploy to make you think you are getting a bargain.

It's a marketing ploy - psychologically - people think something is a better deal - or costs less - when it's under that dollar mark.

IE:

People will buy something for $4.99 rather than $5.00 even if the $5.00 item is superior in quality.

Because it means the person at the till has to open up the till to register a sale and give the 1c change. This is a way introduced years ago by shopkeepers to shop their staff stealing money/notes by bypassing the till and putting it straight into their pockets.

jjjjjjjjj
So that it sounds like you are getting a bargain.

It's the same reason they place the word "only" in front of the price. " Get it today. Only $199999.99."

what everyone else said... but on the psychology side -- 9s are perceived as valuable. So people believe that an item priced at $9.99 is more attractive / valuable than an item priced at $10.00

It sounds less and more people will buy it.

It’s all about marketing!

mastercr8zy88
they try to make the product look as inexpensive as possible.

Fishaholic.

It's psychological marketing. To many people, $0.99 sounds so much cheaper than $1.00.

PepsiLime
Because 99 cents is psychologically more appealing than 1.00. Just like buying a car, people will spend 19,999 for a car that they might hesitate if the price is 20,000.

budlightdonkey

they do it so they can say for under a dollar like it is less or something same with cars get the new .... for under 20000 when it is at 19999.99
