Although alot of people think that it is to do with it "looking cheaper", although it does actually look cheaper, it is to do with the amount of taxes that you have to pay. If you bought something which costs £2.99, the taxes on that which the shop have to pay is cheaper than if the thing you bought was £3. Interresting question! x =] |

it is marketing psychology. the mind thinks 1.99 is much better 2 so i can afford the product. |

Two reasons. The first reason is because things look cheaper as lots of people have already explained. The second reason is that it avoids fraud. The till has to be opened and change given.
Lots of people do not bother with receipts or check. |

It's funny you should ask that!
Here in the USA we're going thru some 'challanges' deciding on the Same idea. Many Americans want to 'STOP' the production of the Penny (one cent) therfore rounding up the Dollar/Price from $1.99 or $10.99 to either $2.00 or $11.00 also!
The US Mint is saying it costs too much to make the Coin. (More than the coin is worth)
I may be wrong but, I agree with the Idea....get rid of the Penny coin! |

It's psychological. Makes people think they're getting a good deal. |

Makes it look cheaper. Now it's getting even worse when shops put 97p and 98p on the end to be cheaper than a competitor |

i have studied in Biz Studiz that
this technique is used to attract the customer...
causing " Psychological Effect " about the price of a commodity.
That a certain good lies in his range, causing some attraction due to price ........etc... |

it's a mind trick...people will almost alway's buy something at 11.99 rather than 12.00 (even when the same product is there marked 11.00) it looks cheaper so people think it is cheaper... |

To make you think its cheaper than it actually is because you see the lower number .. 1 instead of 2.
Which is rely lame because the public arent that stupid.

Retail psychology...it means it's under £2...less that £11
Its stupid isn't it.....it must be proven that it works.... that's why most retailers do it. |

To make the price seem lower to you so you'll buy it - I studied this in business studies :)
£3 sounds a lot more expensive than £2.99, doesn't it? |

because in the consumers mind it's cheaper even though it's a penny people don't see it that way. |
