Why do some people show more compassion toward whales and seals than toward people?

they think it makes them important if they save a whale, they feel small and suffer from a low self esteem 4,000 children a week die from starvation in Africa and the yuppies in Manhattan held vigils to save a hawk that made a nest in an apartment building they are nuts they don't realize the hawk can survive a lot better than they can they refuse to believe it they need to feel important

Because people already get enough compassion as it is. We need to spread the love to the whales and seals, too.

Animals are hunted and people are not.

I'm not sure, but maybe it's like my own affinity for dogs; Dogs, for the most part, are friendly, espeically if they are raised without being forced to be mean. A dog can be a friend like no other, won't talk your arm off, will just be there for you, etc... I'm not sure how a whale or seal could show affection or show how they're happy but maybe they can?

aint that strange hungry and homeless children in america and yet we seem more concerned with the family dog or cat activist protest fur and animal experimentation but i bet they do not know the location of a soup kitchen or homeless shelter

Because the wales and seals are not conspiring behind thier backs ?

i don't know. But maybe whales and seals are more nice and DON'T DROP BOMBS ON IRAQ! People are very mean and sometimes kill other people on purpose. So i guess it's because whales and seals are more passionate towards people.

Personally, I have more affinity with all animals (except rats and fleas and mosquitoes) than I do with humans.

Animals for the most part only hurt other animals when they are threatened or are hungry (I am aware that this is not always the case).

Animals are also being driven to extinction by man, so they need a few people on their side (I'm aware that not all animals are (but give us time))

Animals as a whole don't wage war!

Only human females are cute and cuddly, whereas many animals are :)

Although some animals do as well, human societies seem to be full of people who enjoy hurting others.

The are way too many of us on this planet, and we have no respect for the planet or the animals on it, even to the extent of our own detriment!

Well ButchBrooklyn, if we were to make the effort to save every child across the world so that they grew to adulthood and cured every disease so that all adults lived to a hundred plus (which is currently where most of mankind's efforts are aimed) the following would follow... the population of the world which is already doubling every 10 or 20 years, and is currently about 7 billion, would double every 5 years or more. We are already having problems coping with the current human population, feeding them, clothing them, housing them, and paying them a wage would be nigh impossible in 50 years time. America already has a problem with too many old people claiming pensions. mass starvation on a scale not already happening, wars, rioting, and new diseases breeding in the over populated cities, that would need to be bigger than any city currently on the planet.... It's sad when children die... but in this over-populated world we should be stopping people from having more than 2 kids not helping them to have more. I just hope you are around in 60 years time, to see the children you [saved] dying in mass famines, and to see the world slowly dying as the waters rise poisoning the land with salt and the rains failing to come each year turning your beloved America into one big desert... Spend a lil time and money saving the planet not the human race we are doing fine thank you.... speak to you again in 2066.

Maybe, then you might think the people who tried to help the animals and the environment were bigger than you now think them to be. They are doing it out of a love for life and a love for the planet (not out of some mis-directed species loyalty) they are looking at the big picture not the narrow minded one you and your cronies are looking at!

Maybe because they can't talk.

i think they show more compassion towards whales and seal because whales and seals are not as intelligent and need a little more help and attention that humans.
