Because they think we'll see the sign and say 'Hey, that's only 49 dollars' instead of the $50 it practically is... |

People who aren't so bright find it a great deal. it makes things seem a lot cheaper somehow. I agree it is odd. |

They've done studies - people will pay more if there's a 9 or 5 at end of a number, actually pay less if there's a zero. The brain gets confused between conflicting impulses and tends to look at the left side of a number to calculate size of amount. Then, it's more difficult to add up items unless you have the habit of rounding off. That extra step or two can be enough to push a sale through.
And now that few places are willing to wait for a check to be written and are careless with receipts, it's even easier to push impulse spending on a customer. Clerks can even act as though it is poor citizenship to not have account protection from a savings account/credit card/line of credit. There's even a series of commercials exerting peer pressure for everyone to use plastic.
Does anyone wonder why we have a problem with credit??? Business pressured us to mortgage our future, and too many of us counted on having the same resources available that we've had to the present.
I saw some financial counselor recently while channel-flipping who recommends using cash for everything, to get control of your money. The problem with that is that you would probably also become a target for crime. |

It's purely a psychological marketing tactic. $29.99 sounds closer to $29 than it does to $30; even though it's only 1 tiny penny away from $30. My wife still falls for it, and we're not young! She'd say to me in a store, look, it's only $29! and I'd correct her by saying, No, it's $30.
Wall-Mart have tried a slightly different tactic to entice shoppers in conjunction with their TV ads. They'll have prices like $29.88 so it appears more like a naturally low price and not an entirely contrived artificial price only 1 penny away from a whole dollar amount. |

The stores do this because people feel that 39.99 is so much cheaper than 40.00 |

Basically because if you see 30 everyones like "woah so expensive" but if you see 29.99 it seems "cheap" lol i know its crazy =] |

Wonder B

They think people are retarded and only look at the 1st number. |

Because there have been studies done that people think that $39.99 is much more expensive than $40. Stupid, I know. |

It's marketing strategy as bizarre as it sounds... $49.99 has a more positive psychological attraction than $50 even though it's practically the same. But it works which is why all the retailers have been doing it for so long. |

to make it look like its cheaper, cus when its 12.99 your like wow only 12, but if its 13 your like oh hell no.
lol |

Makes the price seem smaller than it is. If you say something is $ 50. that is a lot of money. $ 49.99 sounds much lower. Wal-Mart uses the " 7 " number in place of the " 9" which makes it cheaper still. |
|

(:

it's a selling tactic :D
it makes the object seems like it costs less.. |
|

Ignorance_is_Bliss?!

Because they want people to think that it's cheaper than it is.... If you add that one penny, it goes to the next 10/100/1000... for example:
299.99 looks likes it's actually in the 200 area rather than the 300, and it's most likely that people will see the 299.99 as cheaper due to that... it's a psychological marketing method, I think.
Hope that made sense. |

ferocious bumble bee (:

because 29.99 is seams like a lot less than thirty.. 'come'on mom the tvs not even thirty dollars!' |

I have pondered that many times myself. That's why my business figures in the tax an everything so it comes out to an even number. As a small business, I definitely don't want to have to deal with all the pennies. |

People think there saving a lot and a study back in the 60's prove more people will buy products at $29.95 than something that is $30. Why because we're stupid and we do this because we are cheap.

advertising trick. Like the $0.99 Value menu at local fast food place. Seems like a deal for less than a buck. But they don't mention the taxes. Makes it seem like a deal. |

It's a marketing technique. On a first glance 49.99 looks much cheaper then 50.00. This is backed up by years of proof. |
|

Atrex

Because it makes the price seem less and because of tax on the dollar. |

frankzilla- naked at the beach
