They are trying to figure out what your angle is. Unfortunately it isn't normal to just go say hi to a random person in a store and quite probably they are busy in a world of their own thinking through problems etc or wondering what to buy and then suddenly from no where a total stranger comes upto them and says hi. First thing is shock as they have to come out of their own little world, second is an attempt at recognition as they try desperately to put a name to your face and wonder where they have met you before and then thrdly is wondering what you are after...they are probably waiting for the "Hi, can you help me I have lost my wallet and just need some change for the bus/to call my dad". All of this would play out on their face like one big "what the hell is this freak doing talking to me" kind of look. Hope this clears it up :o) |

well bart ,it could be you have an accent, people are not familiar with.or possibly you favor a wanted poster image
at the local post office, or maybe someone with your likeness recently died in that area.or it could be the locals are just plain mean people, either way dont give up on sayn hello not everyone is that mean |

Maybe it depends on the area of the country you are in. Southerners will talk to complete strangers and tell you their life story. |

Where do you live? A lot of it would depend on that. EVERYBODY STARES at me here in Asia, and at anyone who has blonde hair or blue eyes, etc. I've become accustomed to it, but it was annoying at first.
When I go back to America, it is always refreshing to me how people DON'T stare. |
