Because the blind person could be sitting in the back seat and need to use the ATM. So the person driving pulls up so the blind person in the back seat can use the machine. |

I wonder the same thing. There is a brail library by my house and it has a sign hanging out front, but the blind obviously already know where it is, so why do they need a sign? |

So a blind person can walk up to them and use them. |

Blind people sometimes have sighted people drive them on errands. In the banking situation, the blind person can sit in the back seat and handle their own (private) banking. |

Even though it is on the driver side, most cars do have a back seat. And there is no law against the blind riding in cars. The person driving them can pull up to the atm and the person doesn't have to leave the car to withdraw money, they only have to put down their window. I think that you may have thought so hard you overlooked the obvious. |

When America first gained independence, Europe said we'd never last cause we spent so much time sueing each other. In the great American tradition, common sense does not apply to the civil courts. In other words, the Americans with Disabilities Act requires everything be as accessable as possible, so the drive up ATM's have braile.
Also, I believe they make ATM's the same way wherever they're ultimately going to put them, so when they make the machine they don't know it's going to be a drive-up one or not. It would be rather silly to have a whole separate factory for drive up ATM's just so they didn't put braile on the keys. |

It's for the blind passenger. :) |

if someone is driving a blind person they could tell them to sit behind them in the back seat so they coul use the atm just like everyone else |

Because groups like ACLU and Americans With Disablities would sue for discrimination if they weren't there. |

They do not make drive-up / walk-up versions.
They make one and put them in either place.
A blind person could walk up to and make use of the ATM. |

I have always wondered this too. I can't wait to see if someone posts the real answer. |

I'm guessing because that’s the was the walk up ones are and its easer (maybe even cheaper) to keep the same design. |

Simple, the ATMs on the outside are the same as the ATMs on the inside. It's easier and cheaper to make 2 of the same thing rather than 1 of two different things. |
