There's one theory that holds that back in the hunter-gatherer/caveman days, there was a sexual division of labor. Men focused on hunting animals (squirrels, rabbits, then larger animals later on with the invention of spears) while women gathered fruits and vegetables. This would explain why men have more upper-body strength, while women have more endurance. Over time, women evolved a natural inclination to consider carefully their choices (looking for bad spots, mold, that sort of thing) and this translates today to women (I shouldn't have to mention that I'm speaking in general terms and this doesn't apply to all women or to the same degree, but I will anyway) being more willing to try stuff on without buying it, whereas as men grab the first thing off the rack that fits them.

Also, if you're talking specifically about clothes, because men are more visually oriented when it comes to sex, women in response have evolved a more heightened awareness of their appearance.
