Why does China have such a big population?

it's an old civilisation. starting from earlier than 2000bc. ancient china was generally agricultural. its people believed in large families then. This was an advantage as agriculture was very labour intensive.
Here's another angle: Many years back, my Biology teacher told us that the reason for china's large population was because the chinese breeds like rabbits.

Just like the baby-boom in the United States after wars, China's population increased dramatically because of fatalities in wars-WWII, etc. It's also due to the fact that many hands create less work. Before the industrial movement in China, most people worked in the fields, thus more children equaled less work and more produced. Now as a result, there's over a billion people and China has established a one child policy, allowing families only to have one child.
