This is how films are recorded, they all are made this way and then modified to fit youir screen, but more commonly you will see less and less modification and anything less than high a def TV will be obsolete. Sooner or later even all cable will be broadcasted this way and without a high def TV you will see the annoying black bars accross the screen. I hope this anwers your question |

Those are called wide screen movies, I am assuming that you are talking about the stripe at the top and bottom of the screen. That is normal unless you purchase full screen. I personally prefer widescreen as you see more of what is happening. Hope this helps you. |

its called widescreen the full screen version actually cuts off the right and elft sides of the screen. the best way to see this is starwars when luke sees the sandmen for the first time in widescreen you see the one on the right step out behing the "horse" monster. but in a full screen he says like theres one and you dont see it. but to allow widescreen to be shown they have to leave the bars at the top and bottom. |

most DVD movies are made in widescreen, witch is supposed to give a more theatre like viewing(I find this more annoying than anything, when your trying to watch it on a regular home TV) some DVD`s have a fullscreen version option,or you may be to get a fullscreen of the DVD you want. |

It's called 'letterbox' or 'widescreen'...it's so you can see the WHOLE movie, as it was intended to be seen, instead of just what they can fit onto a square TV screen. |

Your TV set is square and the dvd movie size is of a ratio 16:9! Then why 16:9! beacause in cinema the screen ratio is 16:9 too! 16:9 ratio give a more panoramic view of the film rather than a square screen, where the pictures are stretched, hence loosing originality! |

To show the theatrical version of a movie. In the theatre, the screen is wider than a tv. So what they did with VHS, is cut off the right and left sides of the movie so it'll fill up the whole screen, with DVDs they put a bar on the top and bottom so it's the same shape as a theatre screen, so they don't have to cut out anything. IF you have a widescreen TV like HD or LCD, it's already that shape so it doesn't have the bars. |

Because you lose 1/3 of the picture that way. Movies are filmed in widescreen format and when they are made to be full screen, you are losing some of the picture. I myself prefer widescreen format for this reason. |

they are in wide screen format, some players will let you adjust size to fit screen but you lose some of the picture.
the directors make them in wide screen for artistic effect and/or the theatre |
