Because the banks want you to spend all your money so they can charge you overdraft fees.
Do you have a checkbook?
You can write a check for .37 if you want to.
And I agree with you. It's OUR damn money and we should be able to get out any amount we so choose.
Just so you know - banks are saving BILLIONS every year with all the tellers they are NOT employing by using ATMs. They could afford to hire someone to stand there and count out pennies for you if they wanted to.
It has NOTHING to do with "convenience" it has EVERYTHING to do with the fact that the banks are structured on every level and in every way to squeeze every last cent of profit FOR THE BANKS.
They have become monsters in this country. |

Banks or ATM companies reduce workload by issuing only 20s and 50s. It's all about profits with banks and ATMs. |

Some ATMs give out 10s, but I never seen one that gave out 5s. Sorry :( |

I have seen many atms that give out 10's, but only one that gave out 5's. I'm not really sure why they don't give out smaller bills in most locations. Oh, and I ran across an atm in singapore that gave out 1's. |

IDK, the only reason I could think of is that machines that dispense $5 and $10 would cost more money to build... |

My bank's ATM used to give out 5's, 10's, and 20's, but they upgraded about 8 months ago and the new machine only gives out 20's. I *think* it might be that if it is filled with only 20's, it will hold more money (dollar figure-wise), because the machine is rarely out of money anymore and it used to be out of money at least twice a month. It is a pain, sometimes when all you want is $5. It is the same with the cash-back at Kroger's and Walmart, it starts at $20 and goes up. |

Way back when I first had an ATM card (back when they were just ATM cards) you could get $5. I think more people are using ATMs and they can pack them with more money if they only use $20s or higher bills.
But I know what you mean - I always spend all $20, even when I only needed $5. That's why I just use my debit card now at stores instead of cash. |

I have seen machines that give 5's, 20's and 50's but they are not common. |

I would say it comes down to what the most popular denomination is, along with the cost of producing machines that offer $5, $10, $20, $50 ect.
I can see your situation, and the best solution for you is to use eftpos instead of ATM's (you get charged less fees that way)..or perhaps try to budget your money and get out $20 and make it LAST!
Best of luck with the saving!! |

i think it's because there are charges when you use an ATM, and being charged a dollar to take 5 out isn't very efficient. |

I don't think they made them "smart" enough to hold and dispense anything other than one demonination of bills. I guess 20 is the logical choice. |
