Why, exactly, hour by hour please, does it take 5 days for a cheque to clear in the UK?

Hour one, cheque put in Post.....hour two cheque received at clearing house and put in pending tray....Hour 119.5 cheque taken out of tray by work experience child....passed to grown up who then stamps cheque and pays out the money into payee's account.

Because the banks invest that money in to the overnight money market. They make money out of not letting you have your money.

In every country in the rest of Europe, cheques clear almost instantly, often on the same day.

Some European countries even have laws that prevent the banks from doing what our banks do.

insane_mad_maniak
the cheque has to travel from department/machine do diffrent places.

once it is cashed, it has to go through checks (not usually if it's a small ammount) throught he banking system, and larger ammounts tend to have more checks done on them, some have to be endorsed by the original sender.

but it's a big scam if you ask me, waiting for a cheque that long was right maybe 10-15 years ago, but now technology is much better it should be tops 1 day!

It gives the drawing bank time to ensure that there are funds in the account.

What makes me laugh is the 4 days it takes to transfer money from my Bank account to my Credit Card account - even though I do it online and they are with the same bank!

Because banks can earn interest on your money for a couple of days before they put the funds into your account.
This is one of the ways that they make their vast profits.

Marky
Becuase on avergae, they will hadnle tens of thousands of cheques a day of all shapes /sizes - some badly written, some crumpled up etc.

These initally have to be process by ahnd, scanned in. Then the relevant banks have to be contacted and the funds requested,

The bank then needs to see if funds are available to release the money.

They may dag it out, but it is a complicated process

The amount of people that ask this question...................................

If they wanted to they could clear the cheque in 10 minutes, why dont they? Because they dont want to! In between the time it leaves the payers account and clears the payees account it is being invested by the bank to earn them more money. Yes, we suffer they gain, unfair? yes probably, unfortunately thats the way banking works.

PS sorry for the sarcasm

I firmyl believe that the people who say that nowdays it is basically just a scam for banks to make money are right

Back in the day it was a legitimate system, but nowdays there is no need..

I did the accounts for a group of companies where many of the payments and receipts were by cheque
I noticed that payments out came out of the bank in 3 days or less, whilst payments in took at least 5 days to clear (sometimes longer) - that you definitely couldn't rely on putting a cheque in your bank to cover a cheque being sent out by post on the same day - basically their unpredictability made it impossible to run a close-to-the-wire business properly using cheques alone.

Nothing happens hour by hour. It is a matter of allowing someone to dispute the item. In USA we have something similar. Regulation CC or the Funds Availability Act.
