Is it because the petrol companies and the government can make it look cheaper?

I remember as a kid we sold it by the gallon in the UK it made more sense as who puts in just a couple of litres. |

Everybody can devide by ten or take off or add ceros by heart. 1000 litres of water weighs 1 metric ton, measuring exactly 1 cubic metre. It is only the select people of the greatest Nations on Earth who can in their head easily multiply and devide by factor 12, 16 etc to work out how many cubic feet and inches and their fraction a gallon weighs... The lack of mental ability is also why most other countries on Earth had to adopt the metric system, only Americans are clever enough to deal in Imperial, it must be the diet... ;-) |

Of the different systems of measurement, the metric system is the most consistent and is used by people in most countries (Europe, Australia, Canada, Latin America, Africa) and scientists (including the USA).
Changing a currency or system of measurement is difficult and usually opposed by the public. Most people resist learning, the learning resistance is particularly common in the general public of the USA and some sectors of the UK, reason why they stick to yards and gallons.

We used to use the Imperial system of measurements. Still today most of us over the age of 40 have to convert from metric back to Imperial. The EEC decided that we should be uniform in our weights and measures and I'm sure the metric system is easier to deal with as it's a decimal system. The USA still use Imperial weights and measures but their pint, quart and gallon are smaller than real Imperial measures as they only have 16 fluid ounces to the pint rather than 20. Somehow 4 oz got lost on the journey across the Atlantic. America has now officially abandoned the metric system. |

I believe it has been the law since about Year 2000 in the UK that we use SI units (the litre for cubic capacity) rather than the old Imperial units of measurement. The few exceptions are:
Non-metric units allowed by UK law for economic, public health, public safety or administrative use from 1 January 2000 are limited to:
the mile, yard, foot and inch for road traffic signs, distance and speed measurement, the pint for the dispensing of draught beer and cider, and for the sale of milk in returnable containers,
the troy ounce for transaction in precious metals |

Yes, I think you are right. When prices started to go up more regularly, the petrol stations advertised the prices per litre because they thought the consumers wouldnt understand the conversion, and they could charge what they wanted without looking bad. But we all still buy it by the litre/gallon whatever. It is how it is priced that you are referring to I think. |

Bad says the yanks have their way and we have our way. He is right of course but is forgetting that we fought tooth and nail against metrification for years and it was forced on us.
It is strange, we are now used to buying petrol by the litre but if anyone asks you what your cars fuel consumption is you will almost certainly reply x number of miles per gallon! In some ways we lose out. If fuel goes up 10p a litre we moan. If you said it had just gone up 45p a gallon people would be reaching for the phone to call their MP |
