Here is the REAL reason why ebay does not allow the use of money orders as a payment method anymore.
Ebay owns PayPal. That is fact. And, paypal charges a fee for the TOTAL amount of money per transaction.
Now, if someone paid me (a seller) by money order (which I prefer to get anyway), how much is PayPal getting? They are getting 0.
Now, if that same person paid me via PayPal, now PayPal (ebay), is getting 2.9% plus .30 on that monetary transaction.
It's all about money and how much ebay was not getting when buyers were paing by money order, check and cash. |

I thought they did.I have bought several items that way with no problems.I think some sellers only take pay pal, just keep looking until you find your item by a seller who will take your money, the way you want to send it. |

too much paperwork and manual labour. when its done online there doesnt need to be any paper, and the process can more or less be automated!! |

Money orders can be fraudulently altered. With all of the crazy technology out there someone can type one up on their computer and print it out with no connection to any bank anywhere.
There are way to may scams out there. I was a victim when I was selling stuff on eBay by money order. I would never accept them either due to that experience. It's just a preference of the seller. eBay doesn't have to force the seller to except a form of payment they don't want to. Most sellers prefer Pay-Pal, it's traceable and safer. |

Because a computer can't figure out how to cash one. Does any website accept money orders? I don't think so. |

Because eBay is nuts. And of course eBay owns Paypal so it profits from paypal payments where it does not profit from money orders.I suppose there is the issue that sellers can cheat buyers who pay by money order, but for some people this is the only option if they lack a bank account. As a seller I never had a problem with money orders although instant payment is nice.Business is so bad right now it is doubly nuts to exclude any kind of buyer. |

The real reason Ebay quit allowing buyers to use money orders and checks is FRAUD.
Sellers were being scammed by "buyers" who are very good counterfeiters. They would send a money order/bank check for more than the amount of the item, asking the seller to deposit the money order and then Western Union the "overpayment" to somewhere (usually overseas).
In 10 or 14 days the bank would figure out the money order/bank draft was fraudulent and they would take the entire amount out of the sellers account.
Sellers would be out both the product, the full money order amount AND fees and charges.
Also, Ebay owns PayPal, so by forcing everyone to use electronic funds, especially through PayPal, they make money twice. |

They don't get money for the transaction. They own PayPal. They are currently looking into adding two more "paperless" payment options. And you guessed it...they own them both. |

I don't think its Ebay that doesn't allow money orders but it has more to do with the seller.
The seller decides whether or not they will accept them.
It may be harder to find them but there are seller that accept money orders as payment but remember when you use them it'll take longer to receive the product.
Now the seller has to deposit the money order, make sure it clears when presented...are u sure u want to use them? |

Because it doesn't make any money that way. They want you to use Paypal, so you pay them paypal fees. |

Well, it's harder for them to trace payments that way. If someone doesn't get the product or something, there's no proof in eBay's hands that they even paid to begin with. |

They used to and I used to allow it. But it didn't take long for me to specify paypal only because it is much easier for all involved. |

I'm pretty sure they do...Well I guess it depends on who you're buying from! |

they used too.
fraud is a one reason i guess.
tax purposes is the other. Too much under the table action and the government wasn't getting its due. |

Because ebay owns paypal and they make even more money off every auction if they can stick a seller with insertion fee, final selling price fee, then the paypal fee. Actually, you're just not allowed to STATE that you accept money orders. But, if a buyer emails you and requests to pay you that way, it's up to you whether or not to accept it. If you do, you just manually mark it as payment received. It's an "unwritten" understanding. |
