There are two different words that sound the same. Carat for gold is the ratio of gold. 24 Karat gold is 100% gold, 12 Karat gold is 50% gold, etc. Pure gold is rarely used as jewelry since it is so soft it will wear away. Alloys of gold with silver and copper are harder, last longer, and are used for jewelry.
The carat is a unit of weight equal to (I think) 1/5 gram. It is an Indian word; gems have been bought and sold in India for a long time. A one carat diamond is a pretty big stone to put in a ring or earring. They can be different shapes, so they go by the weight. |

its a measurement of weight, a diamond is not called a carat, but when they size the diamond is a carat, half a carat, quater carat, 2 carats, 3 carats, it the weight of the diamond. They weigh diamonds to factor in value, while other factors also decide value it helps the customer understand that a heart cut diamond and traditional cut diamond is in actually the same size. Other things that decide the value is clearity, quality of the cut, etc.
Karat is a term for purity of metals, usually gold or other precious metals. |

a carat for diamonds is a unit of mass. the higher the carat the bigger the diamond. but don;t forget about the other C's!!! cut, clarity, color etc.
a carat for gold is a unit of purity. the higher the carat the more gold that's in the alloy forming the object.
ex. 14K gold ring ahs 14 carats of gold in the mix to make the ring. the rest might be nickel, silver etc. |
