I can't answer for anyone else- if I see someone fall I almost always run to that person and help them. If they are really okay and laugh about it, I'll laugh with them. It seems funny only if the person isn't hurt. Now, whether or not the person was really hurt, I would never laugh at someone who has physical limitations (elderly, handicapped, etc.) and fell, that's blatant behavior!
I can be quite clumsy, walk into stuff, bang my head on things, I trip over my own feet sometimes. I always laugh at myself, even when it hurts, and I hope that others laugh with (or at me). I don't know why but that's always my first reaction. I'd rather have people laughing about my fall than making a big fuss "oh my gosh are you okay?" and checking me over for bruises and such.
Ever watch america's funniest home videos or the planets funniest animals? A lot of it is people/animals falling, getting hit, etc. You can't help but laugh.
- Any Psych majors out there that can help answer the Q?? :) |

I don't think it's funny at all. I actually managed to trip stepping up a curb about 14 years ago and broke my ankle. Then about 9 months after that, I tripped coming down the porch step's at my Parent's house and broke the same ankle again! I too now have the same fear of falling... when coming down stairs, I take them slowly and one step at a time. And I never, ever go down an escalator.. I always have to find an elevator. So when I see someone fall, I rush to help. |

It's not a big deal to most of us, I never laugh at people who fall unless they are drunk because I realize some people cannot help it due to certain physical limits. |

Because they usually land on their ***. |

It's just comical because NO ONE call fall gracefully. I especially like the ones that do something like that and then hop up & look around and try to pretend that nothing happened. It's not that I don't feel bad for the them, because I do, it's like watching a bloopers show live! |

Seriously!
What is UP with that kinda reaction? It's cruel and really ill-mannered. Plus it hurts! It's not like someone is paying ppl to fall about randomly, all in the interest of public jocularity! |

I think it's an autonomic response...your body's way of saying, "There, but for the grace of God, go I!". |

Fifteen years ago, I asked myself the same question and at that time I had no such facilities that you now have. Hence I thought of an answer which I shared with my kith and kin.
But it didn’t occur to me to ask this question in Yahoo. Thank you very much for the same. Please tell me whether I am correct.
My answer is as follows.
The first reaction for any one who sees such an accident is a shock. In that state of shock he is perturbed and with full of sorrow expects the worse thing to happen. All these things flash in the mind with no time. On realizing that nothing has happened to the victim his mind goes to the other extreme for pleasure and involuntarily laughs. |

I slipped on the ice 2 years ago and was in a full leg cast for 6 months. That killed me...now I am SO AFAID of falling! Trust me I feel your pain! If I see someone fall my first reaction is to run and help not stand and laugh. |

I don't think it's a big deal as I have done it and almost injured my head. I don't laugh at people because it's not funny if someone gets hurt. To me, anyways, laughing at someone because they fall or slip is a little immature, but as I said that's just me. |

In the actor's handbook under the section comedy - there is a definition that says Comedy is suffering. People enjoy watching others suffer. When a person trips over a banana, it is suffering but we find it hilarious. It's fun at other's expense. |

It's like the joke that goes exactly opposite to the direction your mind typically suggested. Someone is trying to do some stunt and he ends up upsidedown in a surprising unusual manner.
Comedians play this game sometimes. Kramer from the Seinfeld show was always doing this abnormal body language thing and slipped all the time. He did make me laugh many times |

I've never laughed at anyone who's fallen, I don't see why it would be funny at all....I'd just be worried if the person is OK... |

i'll laugh if the person who's falling is laughing too
but if he/she seems hurt, i wont laugh
me myself would laugh if i fell, no matter how bad
once i laughed and cried at the same time |

We laugh out of fear. Sounds ridiculous, but it's not. We fear that it could've been ourselves, but we're soooo glad it's not us and by laughing at others we pretentiously promote ourselves to better than them. |

i think people laugh at others who fall because its instinct to laugh i also believe people laugh because they dont want to see people hurt so they try to make a joke of it |

Its not really a huge deal its just an automatic response on my part.. I feel bad for the person cause it has happened to me before but I cant help but laugh cause it looks so undignified. |
