well, you have to understand that the book itself is not about magic/witchcraft. It is about a boy who is accepted into a private school and must pass many trials and fight many evils to protect the people and ideals he loves from harm. If you really think about it, all he is trying to do is stop the man who killed his parents from killing more people. The only thing that really makes it diferent from any other murder mystery novel is the obstacles (both external and internal) he must overcome and the means he has to overcome them.
Now, when you look at it that way,... is it really that bad? It's not teaching kids to worship Satan. It's not teaching them that God doesnt exist. It's not teaching them to turn a book into a rat, or to follow a different religious path. (simply because there are people who become obsessed with it, doesnt mean that everyone does. it is a series. if you have read one book in a series, and liked it, wouldnt YOU like to see how it ends?) It is simply a means to entertain your child or even yourself. It DOES teach the value of friendship. It DOES teach that you should be loyal to your ideals, to your friends, and most of all, to yourself.
NOW do you still have a problem with it? Isn't it better to think about things rather than assume that because it has magic in it, it is wrong? |

It is only bed if you believe in it and go away from your true teachings. I love the book but you don't see me trying to do magic or fly. I stay with my true and real belief |

I can see why people who haven't read it might be offended because of the reference to dark arts and wizardry etc but its pretty tame and you're not going to get many kids turning to witchcraft and devil worshiping because of it.
its not real. |

There are many stories, including the Bible, which contain elements of good, evil, love, and what might be considered miracles, witchcraft, or magic. It is not what is the books that make us who we are, but rather the choices we make which determine what we grow into. If you are a good and just person, no amount of reading about witches and wizards is going to corrupt you. IMHO that is. |

I think it is not witchcraft that is the problem... but adult themes for children... but I think the series is good because it brings children back into reading which is a good thing... |

Reading these books does not make you believe in witchcraft. Do you hold the same contempt for the Star Wars stories? Lord of the Rings? King Arthur? These all have differnt forms of magic, but you don't hear the same complaint's about them.
Any book that can be responsible for so many kids picking up books and reading again, cannot be judged purely because of magical content. |
