ChocLover | Why is it that everyone's stopped taking cheques? |
Just had a letter from Sainsbury's today to inform me they are no longer accepting cheques. I don't believe that chip and pin is as safe as a cheque. With a cheque you have to sign it in front of the cashier. With chip and pin anyone can use it. I've used my husbands debit card in Tesco before as I know his PIN and nobody has ever challenged me. How is that safer than a signature? I can prove who I am with my driving licence too as extra ID so I would have thought that this was much safer than a PIN.
Also, with a cheque book you can keep all your spending records together rather than trying to keep track from those stupid little receipts you get when using a card.
I know cheques might seem outdated but what does everyone else think? Additional Details Steve F, I would accept cheques. Do you want to send one to me so I can prove it!! |

Good question I think it is all to do with the banks and shops wanting everyone to move to electronic banking for there own reasons.
I personally use cheques because I can track very easy my money.
Also it is useful to me because I am weekly payed and the banks still take approx 4 working days to clear a cheque.
This is a useful time delay and a benefit to me. |

Just down to cost, I'm afraid. It costs time and money for shop staff to process, account for, and bank cheques. Banks then charge companies for processing cheques, and it takes days for cheques to clear, meaning companies lose out on interest- which in a company as big as Sainsbury's makes a difference.
Here in Spain, most banks don't even issue cheque-books any more, and that seems to be the way things are going everywhere.
On the security issue, they use chip and pin here, but also require other photographic identification in many places- not always convenient if you don't have a national ID card, but it makes the process very much more secure- so why not in UK? |

Firstly let me agree with you that cheques are a lot safer than any other form of payment.
The reason people are no longer using it is that if someone has no cash and uses a cheque there is hassle to get the goods/money back if the cheque bounces
With a card if its not there then it is not going to allow the transaction |

Apparently not many people are using cheques in the shops anymore. I use cheques to pay bills as I dont like direct debit, I prefer to keep control of my money by paying when Im ready, i.e on the red bill. |

I believe that the Government want ever greater control. Using only debit and credit cards instead of cheques and cash means that every transaction can be observed. This is where we are heading I believe. |

So have morissons, they say it's to save time and cut queue's. I say it's because they are losing a lot of money, with the cheques bouncing. |

Credit Cards are safer than cheques.
If you steal a cheque book, you can easily forge a signature, but if you steal a Credit Card, you have no way of knowing the pin.
Also, a Credit Card is instantly checked with the bank, so if the card has been stolen, or its limit has been reached, then the authorisation will fail. With a cheque, as the money is transfered several days later, you have no way of knowing if the book is stolen, the account has no money etc etc. |

To many returned from bank
Quicker, less paperwork
Helps speed up the checkout process in a store for the courtesy of other shoppers
Most places will ask for ID with with the card, that is one thing they should make mandatory. As with any credit or debit card |

Chip and pin is far safer than signature based payment (whether it's a cheque or just signing for a card payment). You cannot forge a pin number - it's either right or it isn't - you've got 3 goes before it gets locked. if someone gets hold of your chequebook they can write cheques to themselves and sign them with a squiggle which vaguely looks like your name - the cashier in the bank isn't going to know what your signature should look like!
There is far more instance of card cloning when using 'swipe' cards which require a signature. all the while your card is out of your sight ie in a restaurant, you actually don't know what's happening to it. yes most people are honest, but all it takes is one lightfingered waiter/waitress and they can get the card details cloned within seconds. that chip in your card now holds all the information and that is far more difficult to access and duplicate. as stated, you've got a 1-in-9999 chance of finding out someone elses Pin. If I asked you to take a wild guess at the pin number for my card, where would you start?!
and if you're using your husband's card with his pin number, even with his permission, that's technically fraud, and in the event his card is stolen and rinsed, he will not get a penny out of his insurance company, since he's told you his pin, so the card is no longer secure. |

Its the cost of processing cheques for the banks.
A lot of manual effort.
Plus the clearing system means the money does not reach the receipient for 3-5 days.
Electronic banking is much quicker and safer.
Anyone can practice a signature but if you find a card in the street you have got 9999-1 chance of guessing the pin number. |

Chip and Pin is much easier, direct and quick.
Cheques have to be paid for and take days to clear
What would you accept if you were selling something.
I rest my case |
