jjblue012 | Why is it, that in today's society, money, fame, and fortune, seem to be our first priority? |
|

Good question.
And is is true and sad.
In our present society privilege, power, and prestige commonly go to those who possess money. For this reasons goals such as fame, fortune, fame, power are a priority in life and tend to run people's lives. But does money prevent illness? Does fame attract happiness? The answer is no. You can buy alot of things if you have money but you cant buy health, love, happiness, friends and although you would have all the money in the world, if you would be sick you wouldnt be able to enjoy them, if you would be alone, without a lover , without friends, again you wouldnt be able to enjoy them, and if you would have all the money in the world and not have all health and love and friendship you wouldnt be happy.
Todays society , especialy in the developed country does , through media, make everyone want more and more, showing addvertising to quality and expensive products, to expencive autos, to cells, vacations around the world and so on. So a lot of people worry about the money they can earn to then buy those things. But not everyone thinks like that although the people who put first the spiritual and mental richness above the material one are few. Another reason is that today's sociatity is run by envy , for example, the fact that they have to have a better car or a bigger house than their neighbour push people to want more and more money.
I kept thinking about your question and i asked my grandpa too to find out his opinion. He only gave me this example: "I walked into a bank a few years back, in the middle of a stock take, in jeans and a workshirt, and the woman behind the counter was pretty abrupt. I went in a few days later in a three piece suit and tie, and she was a lot nicer and more polite. That pretty much sum all about sociaty" I guess what he meant to say is that people today judge the others after their clothing, the cell they have, the car they drive, the house they own. Unfortunatly we live in a very superficial sociaty. People should be judge after what they are and what they know not after what they own. |

We live in a captialistic society where money is first not people.
The only way this will change is if the focus of society changes from money to people.
The USA seems to dislike anything that is people focused nad not money focused, this is not due to the populace, but due to the greedy politicans and companies that care only about gaining more money, and more power so they can pass it down to their kin, and keep everyone elses kin under their thumbs. |

Not to everyone, but yes, it's society's way of living/thinking.
Why? Because society always leads to show that humans are the center of the universe, so, over famous, rich, people are the best of the best, the kings of the universe. |

That's what we've been exposed to in the media so naturally, people have been conditioned to think that these are what are important in life. Try to ask those who live simple lives and have an abundance of earth, sky, fresh air and sunshine and you will get a whole different perspective. Chances are, when it comes to values and priorities, they have it the right side up. |

Focus off religion = focus on self. Other societies incorporate religion into daily life, but in America we mistakenly believe we can separate religion from ouselves and remain a whole person (whatEVER that religion might be). We have become a very superficial society. Vanity is an empty goal fueled by a bottomless pit type of need and the lust of the eyes can never be satisfied. As humans we are aging daily and are reminded every time we look into the mirror or look at our peers. When our youth and physical beauty run out we must have other, more lasting means of furthering our illusion of superiority through the "immortality" of fame and fortune. Nothing is lasting save the soul of man. Paraphrasing the Bible: "For what shall it profit a man if he he gain the whole world...yet lose his soul?" Until we realize that we are multifaceted creatures meant to be one with our physical, spiritual, emotional selves we will never be happy because we seek happiness outside ourselves. Modern frivolous mottos like "those who die with the most toys wins" certainly promote more empty consumption. We overdo everything! Americans have more overweight people, own more huge gas-guzzling, pollution producing SUVs, opt for more cosmetic surgery, pay our entertainers higher salaries than our government leaders, and murder more fellow humans who "get in our way" more so than any other country in the world. If we want to look at former fallen societies and wonder a bit at their lifestyles before the inevitable fall, it should not be surprising to see the behavior the Bible speaks of: "...man will be lovers of themselves more than lovers of God..." When we believe ourselves to be more important than or even the same as God then we begin to falter. We are incapable of seeing our fellow men as equals and see them as stepping stones to our own lofty goals, yet each goal we reach leaves us feeling more empty and seeking more to fill that void. There will never be enough money or fame or material wealth to fill that void. It is like trying to satisfy deep hunger with cotton candy. It is not lasting, it is not substantial, and it is not real. Humans were meant for more, but we try to deny our mortality and human responsibility daily and march on with our "it's all about ME" slogan raised high the same way a small dog barks furiously in the face of potential danger. Things will continue on in this rapidly-getting-boring politically correct game of modern life in America, until one day we are all standing by the side of the road oohing and ahhing as the "emperor" is paraded by surrounded by his fawning entourage ... and some small childlike honest voice is raised high from the crowd and shouts "The emporer is wearing no clothes!!!" Then startled from our daze, we will all look down at our royally copied attire and cover our nudity in shame and run home to face ourselves and our stupidity. It might be days before anyone shows his face. But at least we will gain a new perspective. No illusion deceives forever. |

People have forgotten what it means to be happy and have taken other avenues of life that has a side effect similiar to happiness, but falls short none the less. Happiness is pure and has to come from inside, people are afraid to look at who they really are, and cover it up with fame and/or fortune. |

We were brought up to believe happy people are rich people. ABC had a program on past lottery winners and a majority said ther quality of life is worse now then before. The host suggested give me the money and go back to your old life. They all declined. The lottery winners have it all except happiness. Happiness is fleeting. Happiness is a state of mind. Only a powerful belief in wht you are doing will bring you happiness. That powerful belief is THE BIBLE. When I walk away from the Bible I am no longer happy or blessed. Be happy with what you have. Try to make the world around you better. Ignore images from todays society and connect with the world you are in right now! God Bless YOU! |

Angelic,
Funny you should ask about "today's society" being this way. The history of humanity has been an obesesed with the individual. Money provides security for me. Fame tells me I'm acceptable a person. Fortune is like money I suspect. Money can have its benefits, but not as a first priority. I know some people starve because they don't have money, but that still should not be #1. Same thing for fame. We can become famous for something we do or say, but as long as we aren't seeking it out (and we have humility) I think its ok.
A wiser man than myself said to obey God and keep His commandments He will love us and Jesus will love us and disclose Himself to us. The same dude also said we should love God with the seat of our heart, the seat of our intellect, the seat of our body, and the seat of our will. Then he said to love others as we love ourselves. I don't any arrows pointing to gain concerning money, fame, or fortune. |
