It either:
1. Is an old computer and outdated (need new computer)
2. doesn't have enough memory (buy more)
3. Is infested with spy and adware (get it cleaned up) |

Way too many variables for the limited information you've provided. You might be running an older processor. You might not have enough RAM. You might have too many services running in the background. You may have been infected with a virus. You might have adware/spyware bogging you down. You might be on a laptop that is connected to a wireless router with poor/low signal strength. Your ISP might be low on bandwidth (too many users at once). The website you're trying to access may be experiencing high volume right now (internet traffic jam). The possibilities are endless! |

Chances are you have a virus. When surf the net you need a good virus protection program. Norton is probably the best and most reliable. There are many things you can do to fix the problem but most will require you to get inside the heart of your computer [e.g. the registry] to correct the problem. There are a couple of spyware programs free on the net that will scan your computer such as spybot. At some point you will have to do something because your computer will grind to a slow.......very slow....speed. Take it to someone who knows what they are doing and then don't surf the web unprotected. Just like social deseses, your computer can catch a variety of not so nice comptuer virus. Setup a fire wall and use norton. |

Could be an older slower model. Could be a virus or trojan horse or adware working in the background. Could be your hard drive is full of programs. Could be you have too many applications open at the same time. |

if the computer is slow across the board in all types of programs it might be that you are running low on free space ont he disk drive. might mean that you need more memory. it also might mean that your system is bogged down with spyware and/or a virus/trojan. try doing a disk clean up and defrag. restart the system and go from that point. |

Could be lots of reasons, try this:
go to www.downloads.com
download: avg antivirus,ad aware and spybot
Install these. Update and run a scan with each of them.
Hope this helps. |

Most common way to fix it is to add more memory. You gotta be able to open the computer after you buy the memory. A good place to get it is 4 all memory dot com, run a search for it.
Heres how you know you need memory, do control-alt-delete all at the same time to get the task manager up, under the performance tab, look at the Physical Memory - Total line. That is how much you have. Now, at the very bottom is "commit charge: xx/yy". Look at the xx number, the first one, dont worry about the second one. If the xx number is larger than the total physical memory, that means you need more memory and your computer will run faster when switching from window to window, etc. Also, download Spybot Search and Destroy, its free, and get rid of Spyware, that can make your computer really slow.
After this, if its still slow, you probably need a new computer. |

if you are concerned about how long it takes to power up your computer , then you probably need to clean up your task bar , get rid of anything that you don't absolutely need . and clean up any unused programs , they will slow down your system as well,if that doesn't help try system restore and go to a time that it ran faster and go from there. |

you need to uninstall all the crap that's accumulated and that you never use.
you need to look at all the little icons on the lower right (we are talking about Windows XP, right?) and disable all the ones you rarely use, and even uninstall the ones you never use. you only need to run MS Office and Messenger when you are using them, not all the time. same for iTunes, and ... there are LOADS of others.
If you have all of your different install disks or have access and know where to download everything from, you can do a system restore to way back in the beginning when you first got you computer, then reinstall only what you need (and by the way, uninstall all the crap that your computer maker (hp, dell, whoever) gave you)
but, generally speaking, people who don't know how to fix these problems are not really prepared to undertake these tasks.
find a geeky boyfriend, and your time will be better spent getting him to do it. But you want a trustworthy one, not one who will install spying software so he can read your email. |
