The sound of snoring is often related to a Sawing sound "he's really sawing the wood in there". By extension, when one imitates a saw sound one often uses a 'Z' type of sound. So cartoonists knowing this use the Z as the sound que for sleeping. |

Ever since I can remember, sleep has been referred to as "sawing wood." Anyone who has ever sawed wood knows that the sound is: ZZZ ... ZZZ ... ZZZ ... Nothing symbolizes sleep more than snoring. Think I'll catch my ZZZ's!!! |

because a long time ago there was a dude that was chatting with his friend and he fell asleep at his computer. his head slowly fell and hit the keybored, and Z just happened to be the letter he landed on. |

I believe that the phrase "catchin Z's" was around after the actual graphic association with sleeping. Probably because some people snore like that. It became popular in comic strips--an easy way to illustrate a person sleeping rather than saying "snore, snore, snore". |

Z's are generally used to represent snoring, because if you were to spell the sound a snor makes, generaly it would have alot of Z's in it. |
