they will likely keep making them but may change to less expensive metal. nickels also cost more to produce then they are worth. |

The only solution is to find an alternative method of making the penny at cheaper cost like using metal alloys or even different metals.
The penny is copper coated silver and the cost of silver is what has risen over the last decade, causing the penny to be worth less than it costs to make.
But if we just did away with it, we would have to readjust our entire economic system... because no matter how you look at it 100 1s is 100 and without 1, there can be no 100. |

First off - how many times does that penny get used??? If you use it more than once, then it's paid for itself...
The only reason they have to keep making more is that most people do NOT put them back into circulation. How many people do you know (including yourselves!) that store them in a jar, flick them at people (as seems to be the trend among the other answerers) - or otherwise take them out of circulation.
As a society, all we need to do is continue to switch over to ELECTRONIC payment methods (Debit/Credit Cards, Prepaid Gift Cards, etc). This will push the demand down, and will stop you from walking around with a pocket full of jingling change...
And if you think THAT is bad - we have $1 and $2 coins up here in the Great White North ;);););) |

You are funny! It is true though, you make a good point, that is one of the things that the governement should be fixing in our country before they go fix other people's country, like poverty, homeless children in our country that is, child abuse, domestic violence, harsher punishment for parole violators... Nice question, have a star you smart cookie you!

It's probably a proven fact that a penny is more expensive to make then what it is actually worth. I thought they quit making them??? |

I have always wondered how many pennies are in the landfills...lmao cause most people will sweep up a peeny and throw it out. I know there has always been discussion about doing away with it but in the era of bank and credit cards i am sure it won't be long b4 money is a thing of the past anyways. Which sucks 'cause personally I like my cash, all the extra cards and stuff are stupid! |
