Because enough morons watch sports/buy shirts and caps to keep them in their Bentleys, and the government love the way the media make such a big deal out of sport, as it distracts the public from the governments latest incompetence and corruption!
I live in England, where most guys can name you 100 footballers, the clubs they play for and when they won the cup, but can't name three cabinet ministers and their departments, nor the head of the Bank of England! |

The reason they earn so much is because so many people watch football. It is one of americas past times. If you think about just about every type of people watch football poor, rich, black, white, hispanic, gay, straight so they when people watch football they get a lot of views on tv. They want the best of the best so the football players are naturally gifted people who also try hard and work hard, that alone takes a lot of time and effort. Also a lot of endorsement deals come with the job like gatorade, and shoe company's and sports drinks they all want the players to advertise their products.

Much as it pains me, if you take for example, a premier league footballer, he represents the top 0.5% of footballers and if you look at any profession (I know it's stretching it to call football a profession-they never take exams etc) you'll find that any in that 0.5% will earn that kind of money. In addition, it's a short career. Look at politicians, e.g that windbag Neil Kinnock, he has been paid a fortune in the European Parliament plus a huge pension, what has he done?Personally, I find the imbalance between sports even harder to accept. Look at the effort, training etc it takes to win a Tour de France (and don't come back at me about drugs!) compared to golfers at the top, who have a much longer career, it's simply market forces. |

Because the sports industry makes MOUNTAINS of money. Shouldn't the people whose skill make it happen be the ones to reap the benefits of all that money? Or do you think that managers and owners should make more?
if the public stopped caring about sports, and stopped sinking so much money into it, their salaries would drop like a stone.

I'm not sure whether this is actually right but i think it's because they deal with all the injury's they get from playing the sports that they do.
For instance; Football players get payed more than rugby players so as football players don't have as much protection gear. |

I would say it is because people love entertainment and choose to spend a lot of their $$ there. People pay big money to go to sports games therefore there is a demand and the best athletes get paid big bucks to entertain us. Those of us who don't support the athletes probably spend a lot of money on supporting celebrities in Hollywood by going to and buying their movies or buying rock star's cd's etc. It's all the same -that's where the $$ is. FYI- "footballers" are called sports athletes. |

In my book NO footballer is worth paying in one week what most of the uk working population will earn in 5 years! Everyday in these pages you will read of people struggling desparately to pay the mortgage (with 25 years of payments yet to go) on a house that someone like Ronaldo could buy with a weeks wages.
If you went back 40-50 years the worlds top footballers earned around 3 to 4 times the wage of the average working man.
Sorry but talented though they may be, it is just a game and of no consequence in the great scheme of things and it does seem somehow obscene that one man can get 90 grand a week for kicking a ball around while another man is starving to death for the want of 50 pence worth of rice or corn.

cos there on tv and u get money for being on tv plus teams pay them alot so they play well and win games so they win the league and out of it all the team earns allot of money |

Firstly i feel that possibly there should be a player wage cap and a certain percentage of of money generated from the clubs should be pumped back into the schools to help with equipment etc for the future generation, to help our nation be great again in sporting events, but..... nothing like this has been set up so why shouldnt the players get paid so much??? They are the people that the public pay to watch. Its good it goes to them and not someone behind closed doors doing sod all. Also for those of you that say footballers have not got brains, do not comment on things you know nothing about! If its so easy to do why arn't you people doing it??You can try and tell me all day long that the likes of Messi, Ronaldo,Xavi, Ineista, Maradona, Pele, Gazza.... have not got a brain. Idiots!! Their brain is what makes these players so good because they can think quicker, read the game better etc etc. I agree that these stars get paid a lot of money whilst people are starving etc but until something is set up to correct this, then the money should go to those who earn it. The players!! |
