The fund was set up to help assist finding their daughter,i understand they used some of the money to hire detective's to help find Madeline, thats what the fund was set up for.
BUT to pay your mortgage off with it is just ridiculous, paying your mortgage doesnt assist in finding your daughter, surely they had savings for that, afterall they have excellent jobs.
Now i hear the wife wants a career in childcare, the mind boggles. |

The fund is not being used for that purpose.
2 payments were made prior to the McCanns becoming official arguido.
FYI the fund states
1.1 The full objects of the Fund are:
1.1.1 To secure the safe return to her family of Madeleine McCann who was abducted in Praia da Luz, Portugal on Thursday 3rd May 2007;
1.1.2 To procure that Madeleine’s abduction is thoroughly investigated and that her abductors, as well as those who played or play any part in assisting them, are identified and brought to justice; and
1.1.3 To provide support, including financial assistance, to Madeleine’s family.
1.2 If the above objects are fulfilled then the objects of the Foundation shall be to pursue such purposes in similar cases arising in the United Kingdom, Portugal or elsewhere.
Please pay special attention to point 1.1.3.

Because one of the fund's aims is 'to provide support, including financial assistance, to Madeleine’s family' and paying the mortgage supports the family. Go to the site and read the aims http://www.findmadeleine.com/fund/ |

Read what the fund was set up for, especially this clause
1.1.3 To provide support, including financial assistance, to Madeleine’s family.

If you subscribe to the theory that the McCanns are searching for their missing daughter and that is a full time occupation, then it would seem reasonable that the fund pays for the McCanns day-to-day living, which includes food, mortgage repayments etc.
If, at a later date, this proves to be untrue, then we can make another judgement.
If you want to know how much running a charity pays, have a look at the Guardian today! Some really good salaries are in the "not for profit" sector! |

It shouldn't, but there is nothing stopping them. People did not know, when they donated that it was in the clause that they could use it for living expenses. BUT if they were decent people they wouldn't have. They should have got a loan. I bet there is lots of savings they could have used. |

They were both on leave without pay. The fund was set up to support them in their search. To pay their mortgage would have meant them returning to the country and resuming their jobs. Naturally this would have ended their search. They stopped using the fund as soon as they were named formal suspects. Whether you feel they are guilty of some crime or not, I do not feel they abused the fund. Personally I have not donated and could not care less if they are guilty of a crime or not, but I do feel they used the fund as it was intended. |

I think it was a move likely to cause interest. I think they must be desperate financially to do it. They have not been working and still had to pay normal living costs. I think under the circumstances it is understandable. The whole point of the fund was to put them in a position where they could search for Maddy. I think to date they have done a very good job. The case is so well publicised. I cannot think of another family that could do as much to find their missing child. Put yourself in their shoes. Do you think if your child went missing anyone apart from the local police force would be aware of it? I think that by now the case would be closed since there are no leads. The McCanns have managed to raise the profile to such an extent that the Portugese feel obliged to go the extra mile to find her. Well done on them. I think they deserve to have one less worry in their lives. Do you think they will ever know happiness again if Maddy is not found? |

This sort of thing makes you wander if they are really as innocent as they claim. |

The fund is held by a private company and so they can do what they wish with the money. It was never going to be a charity as the fund only benefits oone family - as I pointed out on here at the time. |

It shouldn't. It's disgusting that they thought they could help themselves to it like that. I thought it was to help out with travelling to and from Portugal and to pay for their accommodation out there - stuff like that, not for paying their mortgage here. In fact they should pay it back. |
