Why when you pay for purchases at Wal Mart, do they void the check and give it back ?

b/c they process the check electronically. They no longer need the paper check

They use the check to get your account info then do an electronic transfer of funds.

Brian "World Traveler"
Good Question, They process your check with an electronic scan of both sides then return it to you. This provides several benefits, it speeds up the banking process, it reduces the risk of human error, and the returned check helps protect you from identity theft. This method is currently used by the U.S. Military, and is a sign that WAL-MART is staying up with the latest technology, which in-turn offers their customers the best service available. I am confident that you will see this technology at the register in other retailer stores as they catch up.

I just payed with a check 2 days ago, they kept the check. Should I have asked for it back?

Utz C
Because they run it like a debit card, it goes immediately through to your checking account so they don't need the card copy, ah technology!

Kristina B
I think they do. A lot of checks are run electronincally through banks these days.

worldsbesthighfiver
im assuming its just easiar that way for them and you can just put the check in your own records..frankly i find it annoying...its almost a waste of a check

Because they run it as an electronic debit from your account. This makes the check unnecessary and also keeps them from loosing the money if they lost the check. Best wishes

Places don't need the check anymore the computer give them receipt and coonformation on the check

quietwalker
With the Internet and electronic banking set up in the sophisticated system presently employed, the numbers from the check, identifying your account, are all that are needed for Wal-Mar to instantly charge the purchase to your account and have than figure transferred to Wal-Mart. The check itself is totally unnecessary. This is why they give it back to you. It also saves Wal-Mart the labor costs of handling the checks and submitting them to the banks. Additionally, your payment is guaranteed because, if you have insufficient funds, the check will be rejected and your purchase will be stopped.

mizflame98
they run it as an e-check. They don't need the hard copy.

Wal-mart does a automatic checking system now. When they run your check it is as if you used a debit card. The money is automatically deducted from your checking account. You can save time and frustration by using a credit card or a debit card at check out. Since 911 banks, stores, and other financial institutions are attempting to make credit based purchases or payments instantaneous so that a disruption in the economic environment of the U.S. doesn't hurt business immediately. After 911 some businesses had to wait months to collect monies paid to them weeks before. Also until the Patriot Act ends, financial institutions have the ability to hold a check until the monies clear the transfer stage which means that if you deposit money in the bank, you may not be able to withdraw it from the bank for two weeks. Checks over a certain amount can be held for as long as the transfer takes. Instantaneous checking is their answer to this problem.
