You should be comfortable depending on your tastes and needs for extras. The housing market of course is at an all-time high right now, prices are ridiculous. You may consider a condo until things change to ensure you live in a nice area. (prices can still be ridiculous right now in a mediocre area)
If you acquire your possessions (tv's, stereos, furniture,etc) at a steady rate rather than financing it and paying, you will find yourself doing quite well. I have done this over a period of five years and now have beautiful furniture and nice things all paid for. It's a great feeling...I own it! |

Can you be disciplined with your financial habits? Are the housing costs in your area reasonable? If you can answer yes to the above questions and set a budget and stick with it (don't forget IRA/401K retirement plans in your budget planning) then there is no reason that you should not be able to live comfortably on 53k per year. If you want to live in Manhattan or downtown San Francisco that's another story. You will not be living large, but yes you can live comfortably... |

The location plays a key role. I live in Southern CA, and let’s just say to live in a nice area, in an average home…….and lets say I’m married with two kids...and all the bills...I would calculate an income of at least $75,000 (yearly) and up is needed per spouse. |

If you are somplace like LA, NYC or Boston, you'll live OK but probably not "a comfortable life". If you're in most places other than major cities, yes, it's comfortable if it's just you - if you have six kids, three in college, money will be very tight. |

The opposite ends of this-- You couldn't survive in Manhatten on 53000, but you could live like a king in Mexico.
In St. Louis MO you could live comfortably, in a nice house and a nice neighborhood. |
