karl | Work dilemma? |
Today I discovered that people I share an office space with have been telling tales about me and spreading lies within the industry. As you can imagine I'm absolutely fuming. I discovered because they've been doing the same to another guy in here and he overheard them talking a few times when he was working late.
These guys have been my primary client for the past three months but very slow with paying their bills. It's all coming to a head now.
Should I confront them about their (substantial) outstanding payments and the situation and just walk and find myself a new studio space. What do you think? Anyone been in a similar situation? |

I have never been in this actual situation, but I do know how far some people will go to get ahead. I would first try to get the money that they owe you. It may get even harder to recover the debt if things get more difficult, and they more than likely will if you confront them. Better to try to beat them at their own game.
Having said all that I would definitely take some legal advice just so you know what you can do legally.
Bs like these guys need to be sorted, and you don't want to come unstuck in any way.
Softly but surely is your best approach.
Very Good Luck to you.
Edit.
I agree with asboclothing.... But, revenge is a dish best eaten cold. |

I think that you should front it out with them. Try and keep the 2 situations separate though (outstanding money and gossiping). If you know exactly what they said confront them and ask them what the problem is. However, do not rely on 2nd hand knowledge in case it is wrong. |

Alright Jason Statham, what movies are you in next.
Be professional, but bust their f£cking arses on them bills.
Revenge is sweet, but even sweeter when done by the rules. |

personally i would levy late payment charges and interest on the outstanding amount, due to a consistent history of late payment , give them 7 days to reply then move with court proceedings, this should cause them alot of embarresment , but as the arrangement has obviously gone sour i would also move locations and try to reastablish credability
as a buisness your reputation is paramount in securing and maintaining contracts, if a client is prepared to smear you, why have them as a client?
if you can get evidence of their coments and aslong as they are unfounded you may have a case for compensation and an official oppology, however as its mainly verbal gossip this is often not possible,
do feel free to record any conversation you have with them and you must let them know that you are recording the conversation, then you can ask them out right why they have said the comments, they will either deny it , or explain which will confirm them , then use the recording as you see fit,
either in court , or a creative use ive seen was on a company web site as a mp3 clip, titled as "SO YOU HAVE HEARD SOME RUMOURS"
good luck either way |

Sit tight and start writing a log with the content of these rumours (if you know what they are), the dates and times they occur.
Do not tell anyone at work you are doing this. It is builling and it does make worklife difficult. When you have wrote quite a few entries, make a copy and hand it in to someone of authority telling them you want action to be taken. If the situation does not improve seek advice from the CAB.
Good luck.x |

Dafmation of character springs to mind which you can really do without but proving it might be hard. I would collect your ouststanding payments and if you can afford to do without their buisness do so. A few dead fish under the bonnet of the car would be alright. |

Yes, start collection actions on the past due amounts today.
As for the spreading lies, if you can prove it with documentation and witnesses, talk to your attorney. |

I'd been approached by a married coworker and I refused his advances. This embarassed him so he spread lies about my sexuality to save his face.
I know it's nothing like your situation, nor the same cause of the 'telling tales' but I chose to handle my own experience by ignoring what I heard and carrying on with my job as professionally as I could. I lasted 6 weeks through increasing humiliation before I took what dignity I had and left my job of three years. I still never said a word because even though I'm straight, I felt it was more wrong to belittle someone for their sexual preference...whatever it is. And I didn't want to be around those who did.
I now question whether I should have kept my mouth shut. He was a big-mouthed idiot who cheats on his wife, and did the exact same thing to my replacement, who also left her job and didn't say anything.
A reputation will follow you. I can't advise on specific actions you should take, but I know I'm haunted by action I didn't take at the time.
Good luck. |
