pianoteacherbeth | Would it be theoretically possible to make a robot or computer that could think? |
|

It depends on what you mean by "think." If you mean calculate numbers, they already do. If you mean follow a set of instructions to do work, they already do. If you mean be "self-aware," no. There is no theory of consciousness, so there is no theoretical possibility that a robot can think in that way.
Science fiction writers have written about it, so it is conceivable. See Isaac Asimov, "I, Robot," for example. |

If the inventor didn't have a life and had a whole bunch of time, maybe. |

It could analyze and react, but not "think" as we do. |

Anything is theoretically possible. It's when you dabble in reality that one runs into difficulty. A robot or computer can't be made to think in the same way that a human can, but it can solve complex logic problems if enough source data is provided to it. A calculator can perform mathemetical operations, but as a machine, it doesn't retain the information or "learn" from it. The same principle applies to computers. Unplug one, and it's useless. |

It isn't theory any more. Our government and others have the technology. Japan has operating models for sale.
Your computer already uses "thinking". Type into your browser, the name of a popular company and watch it add the rest of the address.
How do you think a search engine finds things? |

Theoretically, I believe that we already have the capability to do so. |

I suppose the idea of artificial intelligence has been approached a number of times. In reality a computer or robot would always have to rely on what the programmers morals and thoughts were to make those decisions. I really don't think it's possible when you look at it that way. |

If that's what you're doing, I wanna know is it wrong or somehow unethical to devise algorithms for pain and suffering? Sure, big computers can think, but should they be allowed to suffer? I mean in the future.
Your input on this might be of some value. |

This isn't the one I was looking for, but here is a course you can take at Washington University in St. Louis
CSE 313A. Artificial Intelligence Lab /
Project course in artificial intelligence. Students are required to solve AI problems for which there are not existing canonical approaches. Standard approaches are discussed, but the objective is to be creative and to produce working software rather than to master concepts. Projects usually contain elements of computer vision, natural language processing, game playing, heuristic search and heuristic optimization, the application and representation of knowledge, and automatic inference. Prerequisites: CSE 132 and CSE 240.
Credits: 3 unit
Offered: Every Fall Semester |
