Why would a "very important client" be interested in your iPod? Did you tell her that iPod is now in her job description? Even so, you have to give her time to learn the new hardware and software before firing her for not completing a project on it. How would you like it if someone told you that they wanted you to design a bridge in AutoCad (which you had never seen) and have it ready by 5PM or be fired? Probably unrealistic and you'd refuse too. She probably sees your iPod as the same kind of challenge.

Exactly WHAT did you ask her to do?

Well if it was work related she shouldnt have refused to do it but if your not sure if you should fire her or not then you must have a little bit of doubt that you shouldnt have asked her to do it or that maybe its something she shouldnt have to do. What exactly is it you wanted her to do on your ipod and how does that tie into work and a important client. I need a little more detail to really have more of an opinion if she should be fired or not.

I wouldn't fire her, but teach her all of the tricks to the ipod over a bowl of rabbit stew

Was it part of her job description or was she doing a favor for you by doing it?

How did you ask her? Was it a request or a demand? Is it part of her job description? Did you relate it was for a client or did you leave that part out allowing her to think it was something for you? Perhaps you can ask again and also LISTEN to her reason why she did not do it - you both can learn here if you approach it the right way.

ya that would piss me off, but don't fire her. it isn't that big of a deal.

Well, being an admininstrative assistant, I've had to do projects that didnt seem to be related to work, such as ordering shoes or calling for dry cleaning. However, My boss asked me to do them and I just thought of it as "other duties as assigned". My boss is a busy person. I'm there to make my boss's life easier.

You could write her up but if it is a continual thing I would say to replace her with someone who truly wants a job.

Dan
It seems to me that she is your secretary, not your personal assistant. There is a stark contrast in doing ones business duties and doing favors.

If it is a part of her job description then you can bring it up to her, otherwise, you shouldn't have asked to begin with.

Keep in mind that there is the possibility that your secretary is not familiar with using ipods and that she may not have been able to do what was asked of her anyways.

Given that you are the user of the ipod I imagine it would have been trivial for you to do the task yourself anyways (unless you needed the ipod taken somewhere). Sometimes, doing things yourself is easier anyways.

To be fair though, without further details/full disclosure as to what you wanted her to do it is hard to advise you. My honest opinion/snap judgment is that firing someone over something related to an ipod would be uncalled for, unless you work for Apple, or were giving ipods away to customer as a promotion, etc...

Angel
I thought she told you that she doesn't know how to use it, so why would you ask her anyway...?
