Yes, I have given money, and bought groceries also. I live in an area with predominantly service jobs, and high housing, and after 9-11 a lot of families ended up on the streets and never recovered.
In fact, once at a grocery store my then-male friend and I, both downsized from an international corporation, came out and there was a family complete with pets living out of grocery carts. He had always bragged to me that for the past 12 years he had never made less than $100K per year, but I was the one who went in and bought groceries, water, pet food and toiletries for them. He jumped on me about it, I threw his former lofty income in his face and asked him why he didn't do something for them, and he actually told me, "Because I don't see them. They are invisible to me."
It took him awhile to realize he was dumped, but he was.
Pan handlers can be scammers everywhere, but if you aren't putting yourself in danger or giving away your week's grocery money, there is always the chance that your few bucks will allow that person to spend the night in a shelter, or buy something nourishing instead of foraging dumpsters. |

I would come back with something to eat and hot to drink but I wouldn't give cash. This way I know they are getting something they need and not wasting it. You also have to beware of Pan-handlers. They will dress up as the homeless, take your money and make a pretty good living at it. A couple bucks wouldn't hurt but that's about it. |

Ofcourse I would, and I have. Some people just like to shake it off and say "They're just gonna spend it on booze". That's a greedy excuse for cheapness. If they're still alive they're obviously using the money for food. Then they say "get a job". Who in their right mind would hire a homeless person who's been living on the streets for years, and physically shows it? No one, that's who. I do feel bad for them, and I feel it's better for me to dish out some cash, rather than having them commit a crime just to get something to eat. |

Yes, I definitely would. The only exception would be if I though they were drug or alcohol addicts and would use my money for such things. I don't live in a very urban area so homelessness isn't something I see often. However, I understand the point of view that it can be bothersome to be constantly begged for money. I would also not be opposed to having homeless people work at my house, presuming that they seemed 'clean,' and I wasn't home alone. |

You might give him some money but I wouldn't trust him to do odd jobs. Many homeless people are drug addicts and alcoholics and are simply not responsible.
I was homeless for 3 years and there are a lot of bad people out there with no good intensions just looking for their next fix. They feel hopeless and have given up.
I never had enough nerve to carry a sign or ask anyone for money. I stayed in homeless shelters until my Social Security Disability went through, but there were times I was actually on the street.
I would give him a couple bucks but that's all. |

Yes. I do. I try to live by "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". It's always good to help others in need. It's a win win situation. Even if you find out later that they scamed you somehow, your heart was in the right place. |

You're so sweet! I have some friends who are social workers. Most of them generally do not give to panhandlers unless the beggar is obviously disabled. I would concur. Unfortunately the reality is that you do not know what the panhandler is actually going to spend your money on. Furthermore, panhandling is not an appropriate means to rectify one's situation, so I feel you should not positively reinforce a maladaptive behavior. However, your empathy and sympathy is a good thing in my book. |

check it out---they can stay at a homeless shelter, churches have places set up, there are options for them. get clean sober up get a job and get it like the rest of us. i've had it bad at times, living with family, friends, strangers i met on the way, i never begged for money on the side of the road. today i'm more fortunate and things are good but it's the lesson i learned back then that taught me what was important to me and how i needed to prioritize my life to get the control back that i needed |
