Andrew | Would you go into business with a Nigerian? |
My bank manager said they would not accept a LC if it originated from a Nigerian Bank, an aircraft leasing company would not lease us an aircraft if the AOC was in Nigeria. My travel agent wont let anyone pay by credit card if they are travelling to Nigeria.
I have three times entered into business arrangements / partnerships with Nigerians (I am not talking about the 419 email scams) used the usual checks and balances that have worked for me in many other countries. Yet each time its gone sour, because of greed and the need to display wealth even before its earned.
I have come to the conclusion it is just not worth the risk of doing business in the country, yet I know there is great potential, I am sure i am not alone. Infact i suspect it is major hinderence to development and must be frustrating for honest Nigerians
There is something rotten in the state of Nigeria, I would like to know what and why, and what the good Nigerians think could be done about it? |

I WRITE THIS ANSWER WITH GREAT SADNESS AND PAIN TO SEE MY BELOVED COUNTRY NIGERIA DRAGGED INTO THE MUD OF CORRUPTION AS IF NO OTHER COUNTRY HAS ITS WEAKNESS. I, AS A YOUNG AND ENERGETIC NIGERIAN KNOWS THAT CORRUPTION IS ON THE LARGE HERE, BUT OUR GOVERNMENT ARE TRYING THEIR BEST TO SEE THAT THEY MINIMISE IT, THAT IS WHY WE HAVE THE EFCC, AND THE ICPC. THESE TWO ORGANIZATIONS ARE DOING GREAT JOBS IN TACKLING THE ISSUE OF CORRUPTION AND OVER THE YEARS, HIGHLY INFLUENCED NIGERIANS HAVE BEEN EXPOSED AND JAILED FOR CORRUPT PRACTICES. ON THE PROFILE ARE THE FORMER SENATE PRESIDENT, FORMER INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE, THREE STATE GOVERNORS,, NOTABLE MINISTERS AND NOTABLE NIGERIANS. CURRENTLY IN THE HEAT OF DISCOURSE HERE IS THE PRESIDENT AND HIS VICE WHO HAD A SHADY DEAL WITH EVEN A U.S CONGRESSMAN WILLIAM JEFFERSON. WE NOW SEE THAT EVEN AMERICANS ARE ALSO INVOLVED. NIGERIA IS ENDOWED WITH NATURAL RESOURCES AND HER PEOPLE ARE REALLY SUFFERING. THERE IS THIS SURVEY BY THE WORLD BANK WHICH SAYS THAT AN AVERAGE NIGERIAN SPEND A MINIMUM OF $1 A DAY. SO YOU BEGIN TO LOOK AT HOW YOUTHS ARE MADE TO DUPE. I AM STRONGLY AGAINST CORRUPTION AND I SHALL NEVER AID IT CAUSE I HAVE A CONSCIENCE. MY ADVISE FOR PEOPLE IS THAT THERE ARE STILL GOOD NIGERIANS OUT THERE. |

The deceptions have come directly from their government in many cases. Word spreads fast and unfortunately only the strong survive. Until the laws are changed, there is not much we can do, and the people have to change the laws and somebody has to enforce them. |

I have haerd that organized crime is rampant there, especially in the scam and financial arena. The risk is high.
The government needs to crack down. |

The one rotten thing coming out of Nigeria are the online scams, which promise vast wealth for depositing huge cheques in personal bank accounts. FBI investigations have led to the very heart of the Nigerian government being involved, which is why bonds and paperwork are very convincing. Prominent people have been conned, with gunpoint kidnappings, extortion and the like. Banks are very dubious trusting business people with links to Nigeria. |

My insurance company wont insure goods coming from Nigeria because of theft at the docks and - as a single race - they have a reputation for fraud and deceit |

The scams are a good source of revenue for Nigeria. The government is most likely also corrupt.
If you do business with Nigerians, you will most likely lose all your investments. |

What do you want me to tell you ? That country was given independence within the last fifty years. It's basically an infant in the area of democratic governing. We have greed over here and many European countries look at the U.S. ( 230 years old ) as a baby country. It is a case of simple growing pains. I only hope it wasn't greed on your part to over look this while fixating on the enormous wealth potential the country can offer to investors. |
