Would you take the money?
I work in a small CPA office and a couple of days ago I made a major mistake that could cost my employer a couple thousand dollars. My boss is very understanding and is still willing to give me a $500 bonus that he had promised me before I made the mistake. I don't feel right taking the money because of what it will cost him to fix my wrong. But my husband says that if he is still willing to give it to me than I should just take it. Any advice for this situation?

a couple thousand? not a couple HUNDRED thousand? A couple grand may be material to you & me, but just how material IS a couple thousand to this CPA firm??? I'm sure you are not the first to make a mistake at this firm (and quite likely will not be the last). Your question is vague - have you told your boss about the error?

If not, you need to go to your boss immediately and say "I think I made an error." Let him know what happened, apologize for it, and move on. If you feel THAT bad about it, tell him that you will understand if he does not want to give you that bonus afterall. If you plan on working at this firm for a while, your boss will have a lot more respect for you if you advise him of the mistake NOW. If/When he finds out about the error later, the repercussions will be greater because no one likes to be blindsided! Not advising him of your error will also make him wonder what else you may be hiding from him...and it might possibly convey the message that you are incompetent and might be making these mistakes all the time.

If your boss knows of the mistake and is still giving you the bonus, he is obviously very pleased with your work in general and you should take the money. Everyone makes mistakes. But not everyone is mature enough to admit it. It sounds like he recognizes the fact that you are a valuable employee to this firm. Learn from mistakes (yours and others'), and keep putting forth your best effort.

Follow your instincts. You are the one that will have to live with it. Not your Husband.
Will your employer think negatively of you if you took it (would it hurt your career)? Would it show that you have great integrity if you declined the bonus? I would suggest sitting down with your boss and talk to him. Find out how he REALLY feels. If he insists you take the money, then take the money. You did all you could do to make things right.

As long as you were truthful and honest with your employer and he still wants to give you the money, then take it!! Everyone makes mistakes. You were given that bonus contingent on the work you did before the mistake, right? Don't beat yourself up. Sounds like you are a good, honest person so take that $500 and do something good for yourself!

Turn it down once..
Tell your boss you dont think its fair accepting the bonus after making such mistake... However, if he insists that you take the money, TAKE IT! Thank him and be the best employee possible.

I would turn it down. Thank your boss for the offer. If he insists then take it. You do not want to offend him. Hope this helped you.

This is not only a professional responsibility question, but an ethics question.
On both counts, you owe it to your boss and your profession to be honest.
Are there any protocols in place either within the company or your CPA association that might address this type of situtation?
If it was an honest mistake, offer to do what you can to correct it. There is usually a way to adjust things when an accounting error is made.
I think you should let your boss know that you feel bad about it and that you'd feel a little guilty about taking the bonus under the circumstances.
Then let him take it from there.
Consider this also: Your boss may feel a little guilty withdrawing a bonus, especially if others in the firm got one too. By letting him know that you care, he'll appreciate your honesty and probably still give you the bonus. In fact, he may appreciate it very much and give you an even BIGGER one.
But, if you don't first suggest that you might not deserve it, he might see you in quite a different light. And, next time, the bonus might not be there.
Do the right thing. In the long run, it's better for everyone's conscience.

I think you should speak to your boss and tell him you don;t think you deserve it. He will then say you do, then you can take it without feeling guilty.

Just look at it as being part of your on the job training and you are no a better more careful employee and therefore worth another $500!!!!

Everybody makes mistakes in life thats what life is all about.
This bonus was agreed before you made the mistake and due to the error you now feel guilty.
I would suggest you go to your boss and tell him how you feel and if he tells you it is ok then take your bonus and be happy you probable earned it a thousand times over.
He is covered in his taxes if he makes a loss so do not worry about that.

Offer to split the difference. Tell him you'll give him half of it back for repairing your blunder. If he's adamant you take the bonus, don't tick him off but offer to take him out to lunch or dinner,,say with both of your spouses! Luck to you! ;-)=

You're getting the bonus for many reasons, not the least because you're so conscientious about this situation. You should take the bonus--he obviously thinks you're worth it.

Everyone makes mistakes, and yuor boss understands that, so I'd take it, don't feel guitly, im sure you deserved it!

Take the $500 bonus. So what if you made a mistake. You are human and human's make mistakes. Just think about all the hard work you have done prior to this error.
