Your Opinion Question: What shipping company do you prefer?
Recently I have been shipping many packages. I normally use UPS but I have found that DHL and FedEx would be cheaper on most packages. Does anyone have pros and cons with shipping services? Who you prefer for fragile packages, who you prefer for packages you don't care about?

I heard UPS takes the best care of your packages but what is your humble opinion?

Hi James,

I also work in the shipping industry and study the carrier’s rates as part of my job. UPS, FedEx and DHL have the same list rates for ground packages. If you are shipping many packages you should get a discount with one of the carriers and then compare the cost to the US Post Office because the USPS offers the best rates on light weight residential shipments. For example, if you are shipping packages that weigh less than a pound, USPS First Class Packages can be as cheap as $2.32 for an 8 ounce package. None of the other carriers can touch that rate, even with a discount.

There are several ways that you can get discounts. One method is to join an association that offers discounts to their members. I Googled UPS discounts saw that on ground packages, discounts were offered from .05%-5% based on weekly volume and whether or not you are shipping to residences or businesses. Also, just having an account with the carrier gets you rates that are 20% less than retail rates!

I also found a Google answer that talks about 5 ways to get a discount with FedEx that I have listed below as well.

As far as who I prefer for fragile packages, I looked at a survey done by PARCEL magazine and Morgan Stanley, in September 2007, where 400 shippers rated their carriers on “claims processing”. UPS was 6.6, FedEx Ground was 6.3, DHL was 5.6 and the USPS was 4.7 on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being "poor" and 10 being "excellent".

Personally, I go with the least costly service for fragile packages and make sure that they are packaged well and insured if they are valuable.

im my experience UPS is very unreliable and has broken several fragile packages. i do like fedex, but i am a little biased because my aunt works there

Rate # 1....USPS if it is under 70 pds they are cheaper then UPS if you get priority which is only a few cents more they are fast.

Rate # 2....UPS Fast Reliable but little high

Rate#3...FedEx never sent with them but got a package pretty fast

Rate minus -10......DHL Never they had a package of mine for 3 weeks sitting 2 hours away every-time I called the promise tomorrow tomorrow for 3 weeks they done this, finally hubby had to call and tell them if they could not delivery drop it off to UPS they would be sure to bring finally arrive. 2 days before Christmas

USPS is not bad if you think about the money though it takes a long time to ship. But DHL & FedEx both are not so cheap but they ship sooner than USPS. Sometimes USPS offers us free shipments. So I prefer USPS for packages I don't care and FedEx & DHL for fragile packages.

I work in this industry, you should always call each one to compare prices. If you are consistently shipping packages, try contacting a sales rep from each company to set up an account to possibly work out a discounted rate. If you are concerned with damage, consider the mode of transport the package will take. I find that air transport results in less damage versus ground. Also, if the piece is of high value, consider insuring it. Though this may seem like a scam to get extra money from you, it will one day pay off as the more you ship the more likely you will come across a shipment that gets damaged.
I normally use FedEx if i must use a cargo plane and have not had any complaints.

UPS fastest, takes the best care, polite and better coverage areas. note-this means you can get a next day package from fed-ex, and if it's not in your coverage area it really can take up to 4 days.

LEHI
UPS, you have enjoyed their services so far.

DHL is the cheapest. UPS, DHL and FedEx all take care of your packages equally well. I've never had anything ruined by any of them.
