It actually was derived from "The Love Of Money Is The Root Of All Evil." Then through times... it was shortened to "Money Is The Root Of All Evil." Which brings to mind the word.... "greedy." |

Money is a product of greed and trying to control wealth... Here's a question:
If time is money, and money is evil... Then...?
We should just sleep all the time away. :) |

money equals greed and greed equals mean and yes, evilness towards those you love or should love. i do agree with this to an extent. society has put so much value on money that it's forgotten whats important. |

like those who answered before me said, it's really "The love of money is the root of all evil." and i agree in part with it because some people do ANYTHING for money, just look at those who injur and even kill just for a quick buck. .. |

The LOVE OF money is the root of all evil, its from the bible.
It means if you place your love and trust in money you are going down a bad path. |

Actually in the Bible it says "The love of money is the root of all evil". Just like other things that have been taken out of context by leaving out important words so to has this. Money itself is not the problem it is when you love money that it becomes a problem. Yes I agree with it. It is in the word of God. When you love money you will do all sorts of things to obtain it that would not be in the will of God. People that love money are subject to treat people any type of way, do things they normally wouldn't do, lie, cheat, steal, sell drugs and much more. When you love money there is a thirst to obtain it and the drive is no longer to obtain money to live comfortably but than the drive becomes to obtain as much money as possible to the point of blurring all moral judgment. |

It's not "money is the root of all evil," it's "the love of money is the root of all evil." It comes from the bible, 1 Timothy 6:10. I do agree, because if a person loves money more than anything they will do anything to have it. God wants us to love Him more than anything, and when we do, His love in us allows us to love others which is the second greatest of all commandments, Matthew 22:39. |

As several others have pointed out, a similar phrase originated in the bible. I would go even further to suggest that not the love of money, but rather the misuse of money is the root of all evil. There is definately a connection, though. |

The number #1 cause of Divorce is disagreements over finances, some seemingly normal people will go nuts when large amounts of $ are involved, many cases of murder have been committed because of money, we need it to live ,but it can and does bring out the evil in some... |

The correct statement is "the love of money is the root of all evil"
And, yes, I do believe this, as the love of money creates a lot of problems, crime, gambling, wastefulness, etc. |

The others are right on this one. It is a misconception of the Bible verse found in the book of Timothy. The love of money is the root of all evil, which is very evident in the world. I mean take a look at Enron and that whole scandal. Greed definitely took over there. And NBC's new TV show, "Windfall," definitely explores what the wonders of greed can do to your whole life.
As for money, it is a great invention. Ayn Rand is a very well-know capitalist who wrote a book about this very issue. It is entitled "Atlas Shrugged." It has a great description in there how if it weren't for the invention of money then we would not be as advanced in everything that we are today. Money is that medium of exchange in which everyone can take part in. The fact that it is universal (granted there are exchange rates) makes it even easier to trade and do business. Money is the solution to the bartering system, which definitely worked in the past (the way past), but with all the different lifestyles and products on the market today, we would not be able to survive without money.
So money is the exact opposite of the root of all evil. It enables great communication, business trading, and the ability to live minus the hassle of bartering, which would be one more thing that we would have to be concerned about. And honestly who has the time to do that. |

I am not certain but I imagine that it came from one of the evangilist the likes of Jim Baker, Jimmy Sweigert etc., They were so opposed to anyone having money that they gratefully accepted it from their flock and built huge personal fortunes. Isn't it wonderful how these preachers sacrifice for others. Reminds me of the old story. Two good old boys was sitting on the country store porch in a small Texas town when they noticed Rev. Goodfellow leaving the house of widow Jones following a visit for afternoon coffee. Lamar commented how nice it was that the preacher made these home visits to members of the community. "Yep" replied Bobby Jo, "but have you noticed that evertime when he is leaving he is either putting his walet back in his pocket, zipping up his fly or eating fried chicken". |

I agree, the love of money is the root of all evil, written by the Apostle Paul in the book of Timothy in the new Testament of the Holy Bible.
It is very evident today that money is the root of all evil as people are choosing more and more not to use money to help others, or to give it to a Godly cause. They want to buy bigger houses and toys like boats, campers, jewelry and all of life's frivolities that you cant do anything with when you die. |

The REAL phrase is "The LOVE of money is the root of all evil" It is written in the Bible, so, yes, I agree with it. |

The phrase is an incorrect derivative of the Bible verse, "The love of money is the root of all evil." Thus, the phrase, "Money is the root of all evil" is man-made and is simply not correct. |
