Captain Obvious | A question for bosses.. how far do you go to keep tabs on your workers? |
I manage a liqour store in the city, owned by my uncle. My family is rather rich and lately the CEO (not my uncle) has been on my back. It all started when he randomly turned up at the store and found it a mess. Before then, he had barely anything to do with the store. He had the rest of the Liqour manufacturing plant to manage. Now, he takes it upon himself to turn up at the store randomly - and I mean - even coming here on WEEKENDS ON SUNDAYS... to do what.. i dont know... i have seriously no idea what he checks. I delete the internet history etc.
There was an incident about a fortnight ago where i had to leave the shop for 1 hr during the day. I rang up my direct boss and she said no worries, jut put up a sign saying when you will be back.
Well - the CEO was standing outside the door when i got back, demanding to know where i had been. I explained I was told to do it - but he still had the beef with me!
Now - after that back ground. For the past few weeks (about 5) since before this was happening... at open time i would get a mysterious phone call (i mean this happens nearly every day) - and the person ringing would hang up when I would answer. More often than not, this happens again at night before I leave. The phone rings, I answer and the person just hangs up, without a word.
Is this guy for real?
he has a multi million dollar company to take care of - and the store I run has always been and always will be a loss to the business! what the hell does he want?
funny suggestions and comments please. my direct boss and i are already cracking jokes about this and trying to find a way of exposing him as being the mystery caller. Additional Details hey guys, relax.
btw - my workplace is squeeky clean now.
and i seriously laugh about this situation.
my direct boss is saying how creepy this is too. i just think it is comical. |

While it may make you feel better to expose him and make a point, it does absolutely nothing.
As a CEO and your manager's manager, he has all the rights he needs to check up on his subordinates. I don't see anything he is doing that is against the law.
I agree that his methods are childish and unbecoming of a CEO, but if he wants to act that way, he can. On the other hand, putting CEO on the spot will not help you at all. If you are in at-will state, he can very well fire you without any reasons what so ever.
I'd suggest you do absolutely nothing. Especially if you value your income.
<edit>
If your uncle owns the whole thing, then have your uncle to have a "casual" conversation with the CEO. He could say something like "I heard there are some unusual calls at around *pm every day... I wonder if you want to check into this...?"
It does two things. By not accusing him (without any evidence), you and your boss will stay clear. But, by your uncle mentioning this, it tells your CEO that he (the owner) suspects something.
I bet he'll get the message.
The key is, you do nothing directly. The one who has the real power should mention this... casually. |

i think he likes to hear ur voice |

TOASTEE
|
get caller ID on the phones in there
hook up an answering machine and leave a mesage that you want him to hear (dont really leave, just let the machine pick it up) an then listen to him go nuts
as you answer, say hi uncle whatever your name is...like your uncle is walking in the store.
pretend you are in the middle of another conversation and mention the bosses name as you answer (dont make it sound like you are talking into the phone, but loud enough so he thinks he is being talked about)
then maybe he will answer you
good luck - thats all I can think of, its getting late LOL |
