A question on office Politics?
The office vehicle did not pick up an employee from the Production Department. So the Production Manager sent an email to the Administration Manager informing him about the lapse and marked a cc to the concerned employee.
Was it right on the part of the Production Manager to mark a cc to the employee working under him?
A. From the PM's side, he is informing AM of the situation and keeping his subordinate in the loop about what was said. The response will go to both the PM and the employee. The PM will not be a middle man passing messages back and forth. Also, the PM will be viewed as being a champion to his subordinate and taking care of his team.
B. From the AM's side, he will be forced to include an official reason to both the PM and the employee. He is also "put on notice" that this answer will be transparent to the employee concerned. The AM's direct answer, including any apologies, will likely make the employee feel vindicated. It will not be as effective going through a 3rd person.
C. From the employee's side, being kept in the loop and having a direct response when he was "wronged" is important. He will likely appreciate the gesture.
D. Can the email between PM and AM be private? Sure. However, a good PM will likely end up forwarding the email from AM explaining what happened to his subordinate anyway.
I recommend:
1) I don't view this as much office politics as it is "the proper way" of communicating a grievance in an effective and efficient way. I probably would have done the exact same thing if I were in the position of the PM without any intention of playing politics.

Yes, it is a good morale booster to that employee to know that action is being taken. It's no secret to him that he wasn't picked up.

Yep. That way the employee knows that action is being taken to correct the situation.

I liked everyones answers so far! Yes the employee should be cc'd in on this email for all of the reasons listed in the answers above.

Why not??? The concerned employee should know that some action has taken place for what happened.
In fact it is ettiquettes to mark the person involved in the mail so as to keep him in the loop of the communication
