Aggression in the work place-- at what point does it go too far?
I am a manager in a high stress work environment. I have to work closely with other managers routinely and we do not always see eye to eye. Today during a heated discussion with another male manager, he abruptly slammed his hands down on my desk while I was talking and stormed off. I tried to call him back and he just shook his head and continued walking away. I was greatly bothered by this aggressive gesture and felt this was not only unprofessional, but also very intimidating coming from a male. I met with the HR manager and voiced my concern and discomfort about this. I was told I did the right thing. I've been working in a corporate environment for years and have never encountered this. I am very upset and would like to know if I am over-reacting or if this was out of line?? What's really disappointing is that this co-worker and I have had a good working relationship until very recently. He has become extremely defensive lately for no apparent reason?

20 years ago, you would be called a wimp.

today, any agressive behaviour constitues a 'hostile work environment' and your co-worker can be sued for harassment. your company will also be liable if no remedial steps are taken to correct this.

you can file a grievance with the state labor commission. Or you could point this out to your superior and HR so that they CLEARLY UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE TELLING THEM.

Agression used to be a viable negotiating tactic. I even knew of a woman (pregnant at the time) who through a fit, tossed a chair across the room and demanded an additional 'MOU signing bonus" if the contract negotiations were to continue;

As for your relationship with your co-worker. Something definitely has changed. If you are still on speaking terms...try to find out. It may be personal, he may be concerned about his job security.

YOu may want to consider notifying Security in this matter.

Hi Lu lu
It is sad when co-works turn a productive day and work place into a holy terror of a place to work with lose productivity, what a waste of time for you and all those that have to work with someone like that.
You did the right thing by bring his hostile and unwarranted behavior to some one higher up in the office, this becomes record and not just here-say.
Have you ever heard of " Hostile Working Enviorment?" this when someone with in the work place has become unruly and offensive as well treating other with disrespect and down right threatening, this is against the law, both state and federal. If this continues to happen you should continue to report this person to your superiors keeping his hostilities on record so that when you have had enough you can file formal charges against the person who is doing this and then you can file a civil suit against the company, charging the man with creating a hostile working enviorment and the company for not putting a stop to.
Well good luck and don't let them intimidate you in any shape or form. Keep your head up and stay focused,,,,Keep the Faith....PEACE....cya....

Yes, by going to HR, you did the right thing. You can't be expected to confront anyone in that sort of state where they are banging on tables. If he has personal issues outside of work that are affecting his attitude, then they can have him address this. There is no place for that sort of unprofessional behavior in the workplace.
